Magical Lapland February 2025

Claire Summers on 02 February 2025
In February 2025 we booked a last minute holiday to Lapland. We opted for a week self catering rather than 3 nights Full Board, as we had done before, and we really enjoyed the duration and relaxing in a log cabin. We took a lot of food from the UK to begin with in our suitcases. We then topped up with a few bits from the supermarket which was a 5 mins walk away (approx £80 for the week). The Supermarket has everything you need and more (take a sledge with you so you can pull your food back to the cabin). We stayed in the Levi Log Cabins, they can sleep up to 6 people in a 1 bedroom lodge. However, personally as the mezzanine (steep steps) is open plan to the downstairs, either share with your children or with close adults where you wake up at the same time. The cabins are furnished differently as they are individually owned, ours was modern with a new kitchen and a beautiful kitchen table. All cabins have wood burners, saunas, underfloor heating, TV's, no wifi but our cabin had a large TV with a few English Channels on their cable. We had great mobile signal and was able to use our Fire Stick with our phone's hotspot. We had booked the Lapland excursions before we went plus pre ordered our thermal suits and boots which we picked up on the first day. It's a 5 min walk to pick them up so wear very warm clothing and sturdy boots for your first day and last day. After dinner we walked to the nearby Lake to see if the Northern Lights were going to show, although the KP forecast was high and there was no cloud, unfortunately no lights appeared. The next day we were scheduled to do Snowmobile ride. The company who run this give you everything you need, even if you didnt come prepared. It was 28km, which is approx 2 hours. The first hour takes you to a warm cabin where they provide hot drinks and cakes, all included. Then you swap drivers if you wish and ride back. This was our first time snowmobiling in the light and it was amazing to see the snow and trees everywhere, the scenery was stunning. As it was -24 celsius, afterwards it was back to the cabin for a much needed sauna. Our 2nd full day, we walked into Levi town (10mins), to have a walk around the shops and have a mooch around the surrounding area, the village is so cute. We had a meal at Lost Tacos but unfortunately it was very expensive and not very good. Eating out in restaurants in Levi is much more expensive than in the UK but there are a couple of fast food places where the prices are cheaper. The next day we took the ski bus to Leevilandia, South Point (15.5 euros each) Leevialandia is on the South Slopes (skiing and snowboarding plus Ski School) and is where young kids can go snow tubing and tobobaggining, although we did the snow tubing, its not a large area and we only had 3 runs. Its a good area for very young kids and it has an indoor play area too but for adults who want to play in the snow its not worth the visit but it was good to ride the bus and understand how it works getting around the different slopes. We decided to have a buffet meal at the Design Hotel Levi and for 33 euros a person it was very good value, the rest of the time we cooked in the cabin as it was so much cheaper. The prices in the Supermarket are very good, it made us wonder why eating out was so expensive in Levi so maybe its just a captive market scenario. On one of our walks exploring the town we came across the start of the 766 steps behind the Levi Hotel which takes you up to the top of the Fell. It took us 15 minutes to walk up and it was an easy walk, no steep steps and they match your stride nicely. The views at the top are amazing, a look back down at Levi town, being in the forest with so much snow on the trees, it was magical. At the top, instead of going in the Panorama Hotel cafe you can walk another 10 minutes to the secret cafe, which is a wooden hut with an open fire and you can purchase drinks and crepes. The woods around here and the views are just magical, a real winter wonderland, especially if there is snow on the trees. We had a drink in the secret cafe, watched the skiers for a while and took the Gondola Express back down (10.5 euros pp) just for the experience of going back down another way. The next day we did the Husky Experience. An 8km track through the woods, it was very picturesque, about 30 mins each driver and it was a well organised excursion finishing with a drink and sweet bread in the hut to warm up around the fire. A must do in Lapland. With the 15 minute transfer and waiting for the other group to finish this was a 3 hour trip in total. Late afternoon we booked an excursion to the Laino Snow Village (40 min transfer). It was very impressive but for me it was too expensive. I felt at £80pp it is not something I would recommend unless you really want to see snow sculptures. Saturday morning was our Reindeer excursion, this was really good. A 15 min drive from Levi and a 3km route being pulled through the forest where wild Reindeers are roaming as well. After the sleigh ride we had plenty of time with the Reindeer including feeding them in their paddock, followed by a hot drink and cakes in a warm hut. We just chilled on our last day, had a sauna, planned our next visit as there is more to do, we packed our suitcases ready to go home the next day. Throughout the week the temperatures ranged from -24 to +4 in the space of 4 days, which is unusual. The plus degrees melted the snow on the trees really quickly, which you dont want really for that winter wonderland feeling so I am pleased that happened at the end of our week. There is everything you need in Levi, you can buy anything at all, so if you forget anything they have it covered. Unfortunately we didnt see the Northern Lights all week which gives us another excuse to come back. We loved going self catering, we loved the slow pace and being on our own schedule, it was just magical and we will be going back. I am happy to answer any questions you may have so please dont hestitate to get in touch.
