I SAW A LEOPARD

Dean McMackin on 05 October 2025
This is possibly the best day I’ve had on a FAM trip! It started with a jeep safari in Yala National Park and what a morning it was.

We spotted not one, not two, but three leopards. Seeing a leopard in the wild has been on my bucket list for years, and today it finally happened. To see them so close, in their own space, was something I’ll never forget.

Yala is a brilliant place, full of life. We saw every type of animal you can imagine — elephants, crocodiles, deer, buffalo, and so many birds. The park is a mix of open plains, forest, and wetlands, and with one of the highest leopard densities in the world, every safari drive feels exciting because you never know what might be around the corner. Seeing those leopards was honestly a highlight — something I’ve wanted to tick off for years — and when they appeared, the feeling was brilliant, emotional and exciting all at once.

After the morning drive, we headed back to Cinnamon Wild Yala, a great spot surrounded by nature. You can literally sit and have a coffee while watching wildlife wander past — it’s that close.

Then we made our way to Galle, where we stopped at The Fortress Koggala for dinner. It’s right on the beach with a lovely open layout and a really nice atmosphere. The food was spot on, the service was great, and it was just one of those meals where you sit back and realise how lucky you are to be there.

After dinner, we moved on to our hotel, Fort Bazaar, right in the middle of the Galle Fort area. It’s a fantastic location — surrounded by cafés, bars, and shops, all within walking distance. The hotel itself has a relaxed feel, stylish but comfortable, and perfect for exploring the fort and town.

Galle has to be one of the best holiday towns I’ve been to. The streets are full of life — music coming from the bars, people out late enjoying themselves, and shops open selling everything from local crafts to clothes and jewellery. It’s got a great buzz about it and such a friendly feel. I absolutely loved Galle.

The group went out for something to eat later that evening, but I decided to sneak off and pick up a few gifts while they were in full voice singing away. Yes, you guessed it… Taylor Swift again!

From seeing wild leopards in Yala to finishing the day by the beach in Galle, it honestly couldn’t have been better. Days like this remind me exactly why I love what I do.
