South Korea – The New Travel Hotspot

Clare Charles on 28 September 2025
I asked my daughter recently where would be at the top of her list for our next family holiday and, without hesitation, she said South Korea. I wasn’t surprised. Once considered an add-on to a Japan itinerary, South Korea has established itself as a standalone destination for travellers of all ages.

With its blend of history, culture, food, and natural beauty, South Korea offers something for everyone. Add in direct flights from London (around 12 hours) and a super-efficient high-speed rail network once you arrive, and it’s easier than ever to explore this dynamic country.

Here’s why South Korea should be at the top of your list:

🌆 Seoul – A City of Contrasts Palaces and traditional markets stand side by side with modern skyscrapers, neon-lit streets, luxury malls, and buzzing food stalls. It’s also the jumping-off point for visiting the Korean Demilitarised Zone, which has become a significant tourist destination.

🌊 Busan – Vibrant Coastal City South Korea’s second-largest city is a coastal gem. Busan offers sandy beaches, hot springs, mountain temples, Gancheon Cultural Village and some of the country’s freshest seafood. Its relaxed seaside atmosphere offers a perfect contrast to the energy of Seoul.

🌋 Jeju Island – A Volcanic Paradise A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of South Korea’s favourite honeymoon destinations, Jeju Island is famed for its volcanic landscapes, lava tubes, waterfalls, and lush hiking trails. Known as the “Hawaii of Korea,” it’s ideal for nature lovers and romantics alike.

🏯 Gyeongju – The Ancient Capital Known as the “museum without walls,” Gyeongju brims with cultural treasures - temples, palaces, and royal tombs that tell the story of Korea’s rich heritage.

🏞️ Andong – Tradition in the Mountains Surrounded by mountains, Andong is home to the Hahoe Cultural Village, a UNESCO WHS where traditional Korean life is beautifully preserved.

🍜 A Feast for the Senses South Korea’s food culture is legendary. From fiery kimchi and comforting bibimbap to Korean fried chicken, sizzling BBQ, and delicate temple cuisine, every meal is an adventure. Street food stalls tempt with tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and hotteok (sweet pancakes), while fine dining offers a modern spin on tradition.

🎶 K-Culture – Global Influence The reason my daughter has South Korea at the top of her list! The Korean Wave has taken the world by storm, from addictive K-Dramas and chart-topping K-Pop to the booming K-Beauty industry.

🏨 Where to Stay South Korea’s accommodation is as varied as its landscapes. Choose sleek 5-star hotels in the city, stylish beach resorts, or immerse yourself in tradition by staying in a hanok (traditional Korean house). For something truly unique, spend a night in a Buddhist temple or unwind in a traditional jjimjilbang (Korean spa).

🌸🍂 When to Visit Spring brings spectacular cherry blossom season, while autumn brings stunning foliage. Both are perfect times to explore South Korea.

✨ Why Now? With direct flights from London, easy high-speed rail connections across the country, and a global spotlight on Korean culture, there’s never been a better time to explore.
