Houston Highlights: Big Flavours, Big Art and Big Hospitality
Touchdown in Texas: We kicked off the trip with a warm welcome from our fantastic hosts Daniel Taylor and Michelle Serrano from Visit Houston, along with the ever-energetic Amy Watts from Black Diamond PR. Their passion for the city was infectious and set the tone for a week of discovery.
Hotel Granduca Houston: Our home base was the elegant Hotel Granduca, where Kimberley and Denise made sure we were looked after in true Texan style. Inspired by a 16th-century Italian palazzo, the hotel oozes charm and sophistication. One personal highlight was seeing the stunning photography by David Yarrow throughout the property. I first discovered David’s work years ago during a webinar showcasing his images from Amboseli, including the unforgettable Tim the Big Tusker Elephant, so seeing his art in person felt like a full-circle moment and added to an added touch to the whole experience!
Foodie Heaven: Houston’s culinary scene did not disappoint. From fajitas at The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation to smoky barbecue at The Pit Room, and even a bagel breakfast at Space City Bagels (yes, they’re NASA-tested), every meal was a celebration. We sipped champagne at St. Regis Houston (after I successfully completed a Champagne Sabrage!), dined waterfront at Landry’s Seafood House, and tried mochi donuts at Mochinut in Chinatown. And yes, we made the essential pit stop at Buc-ee’s for their iconic clean bathrooms!
Culture and Curiosity: We explored the stars at Space Center Houston, soaked up history at the Eternal Gandhi Museum (which felt fitting with the Indian Heritage in my family), and admired intricate architecture at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. The arts were front and centre too, with behind-the-scenes access at Alley Theater, a private docent tour of the Kinder Gallery, and a sneak peek of Rock, Roll and Tutus by Houston Ballet.
Finale with a Bang: We wrapped things up with lunch at Saint Arnold Brewing Company which was perfect for hair of the dog after the incredible Benson Boone gig at the Toyota Center, a perfect send-off to a week that blended luxury, learning and a whole lot of fun!
Houston truly surprised me. It’s a city of contrasts; cosmopolitan yet grounded, artistic yet playful, and always welcoming. If you’re thinking about a trip to Texas, whether for leisure or business, I’d love to help you plan something unforgettable - and even take in the Rodeo with a trip in the spring time!
