Borneo
Borneo was simply amazing! We flew Air Malaysia from Heathrow direct to Kuala Lumpur. We also stayed in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi. I would recommend this exact itinerary and duration of a minimum of two weeks but three would be much better. See my other journal on Langawi and Kuala Lumpur.
In Borneo we stayed at a 5* hotel called the Shangri La Tanjung Aru which was directly on its own private sandy beach. There is another hotel called the Rosa Risa which is the same chain and down the road but the Tanjung Aru is much nicer.
The hotel is situated in Kota Kinabalu and only around ten minutes’ drive from the airport. The flight duration from Kuala Lumpur is two and a half hours. You can also fly here from Singapore and Hong Kong and the duration is also the same.
The hotel has a good variety of restaurants and the standard is excellent. Rooms are spacious, clean and also of a high standard. The hotel has many different room types and views such as garden, land, golf course and sea view. The hotel has a club lounge which guests can upgrade to and enjoy snacks and drinks.
The main town of Kota Kinabalu is a short drive away and has a great shopping centre and various restaurants including plenty of sea food and bars.
There is a choice of some fantastic excursions and my top choices would be either a day visiting the Orang-utans in Sandakan or the white water rafting. There are also boat trips, water sports and lots of other activities.
Borneo was one of my favourite destinations and I recommend at least a week in Borneo if combining with another area of Malaysia. I would recommend to anyone and all ages. It would also be a perfect honeymoon choice combined with either Hong Kong or Malaysia.
