Female-Only Expedition Through Morocco

Morocco is a country of rich traditions, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultures, but beyond the usual tourist spots lies a side of Morocco shaped by the strength and resilience of its women. For those seeking a unique and transformative experience, Intrepid Travel's Women’s Expedition offers just that—an empowering adventure through some of Morocco’s most remote regions, where women play an essential role in preserving heritage and driving change.

A Sisterhood of 12 Fabulous Women: One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey was the group of 12 women from diverse backgrounds. Some were extroverts eager to connect, while others preferred to take things in at their own pace. Regardless of our differences, we quickly bonded and formed a supportive, harmonious sisterhood. From day one, it was clear that this group of women would become lifelong friends, sharing stories and experiences that went far beyond the trip.

Our Team: Our adventure was made even more unforgettable by the incredible team who supported us throughout. Mama Bia, our female guide, was one of the first women to lead treks in the M'Goun Valley. Her deep knowledge of the mountains and her personal stories brought the landscape to life.

The team also included Mohammed, Nadia, and Malika—who made sure we were well-fed and entertained during the hike. Their warmth and dedication ensured we had everything we needed, from delicious meals to lively evening entertainment.

Hanane, our Intrepid guide who offered us beautiful henna tattoos and guided us through cultural practices. She played an integral role in making us feel welcome and connected to the traditions of the region.

Starting in Marrakech: The journey began in Marrakech, the vibrant heart of Morocco. After a welcome briefing, we explored Djemaa el-Fna, the famous square in the Medina, where street performers and food vendors set the stage for our Moroccan adventure. For those arriving early, the Majorelle Gardens and Koutoubia Mosque offer a more tranquil introduction to the city.

Journeying to Bou Tharar: From Marrakech, we travelled into the Atlas Mountains, stopping at Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its mudbrick ksar, which has appeared in films like Lawrence of Arabia. After exploring the site, we had lunch at a women’s cooperative restaurant, where over 40 women prepared the most delicious tagine I’ve ever tasted.

We spent the night in the remote village of Bou Tharar, staying at Gite d’Etape Tamaloute. The guesthouse, set against a backdrop of hills, offered a serene environment to disconnect and recharge before our hiking adventure.

Hiking the M'Goun Valley: The true adventure began the next day as we set off on a four-day trek through the stunning M'Goun Valley with Mama Bia. Her intimate knowledge of the landscape made every step of the journey more meaningful. Along the way, we encountered local women and children, gaining insight into their lives and the role women play in preserving Moroccan traditions.

We were also joined by our cooking team—Nadia and Malika—who prepared meals over campfires and provided entertainment during the evenings. The food was a highlight of the trip, with fresh, local ingredients turned into mouthwatering tagines, bread, and couscous.

Cooking and Cultural Immersion: One of the trip’s highlights was learning to cook traditional Moroccan dishes. In Agouti Village, we joined local women for a couscous cooking demonstration, learning the techniques that turn this iconic dish into a labour of love. We also had the chance to watch women bake khobz (Moroccan flatbread), which paired perfectly with our tagines.

In Amejgag, we participated in a weaving workshop, learning an ancient craft that’s passed down through generations. The village offered stunning views of the surrounding hills and the chance to connect with local women who were eager to share their skills.

Music, Dance, and Henna Tattoos: The journey was also filled with music and dance. In Issoumar, we participated in a traditional evening of music with local women. It wasn’t a formal performance, but rather a cultural exchange where we sang, danced, and learned the significance of the songs. Hanane was also there, giving us beautiful henna tattoos, adding a personal touch to the cultural exchange.

A Wedding Celebration: One of the most unforgettable moments occurred during our return to Bou Tharar, where local women dressed us in traditional Moroccan attire for an impromptu Amazigh-style wedding celebration. Despite feeling out of my comfort zone, I embraced the lively celebration, which included music, dancing, and plenty of laughter.

Back to Marrakech: After saying goodbye to our amazing team, we headed back to Marrakech for one final dinner with Zineb, a local businesswoman whose story of perseverance inspired us all. The evening concluded with a performance by The Houariyates, an all-female music band that celebrates the strength and power of women. The band’s music spoke of sensuality, love, and longing—a perfect way to honour the women we met along the way.

A Journey of Empowerment: I was fortunate enough to take part in this female-only adventure, and it was a life-changing experience. The trip gave me the chance to reflect on my own life while learning from the incredible women I met throughout Morocco. It also reignited my passion for slow travel—moving beyond the tourist traps and immersing myself in the culture, food, and traditions of a place. This journey isn’t just about visiting Morocco—it’s about connecting with women from different walks of life, learning new skills, and experiencing the beauty of a culture that has so much to offer. For those seeking an adventure that goes beyond sightseeing, this female-only expedition is an empowering opportunity to grow, learn, and build lifelong friendships. I’m already planning my next adventure—this time in India. If you're interested in joining me, feel free to reach out!

To wrap up an unforgettable week, we decided to add something truly special: a sunrise hot-air balloon ride. It was hands down one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had. The tranquility of the flight was incredibly soothing, and the views were simply breathtaking. What a way to end an amazing week!
