Experience this...

The best time to see the Northern Lights

Witnessing the Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience, and Finland’s stark, snowy wilderness, free from light pollution and with unobstructed skies, provides one of the best chances to see the natural phenomena.

The best time for sightings in Lapland is between mid-August and mid-April. Better still, you can expect the lights to be even more exceptional from later this year until early 2026, the predicted next occurence of the solar maximum (the highest rate of solar activity during the sun's eleven-year cycle).

Take a reindeer sleigh ride

There’s no better way to see this fairytale setting than from the comfort of a sleigh. Once you’re tucked up warm in blankets, a herd of reindeer will whisk you off through the forest to a Lappish kota, a traditional wooden hut where the animal’s herder is waiting for you. While you enjoy a delicious lunch cooked by an open fire, hear fascinating stories about life in Lapland, which frequently revolve around the reindeer!

Experience an Arctic spa

Do as the Finns do and go for a traditional Arctic spa to look after your mind and body. This thermal experience combines ice swimming with a hot sauna, something that has been enjoyed by the Rovaniemi people for years, and helps to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation. If taking a dip in a lake doesn’t appeal, you can stay at Octola and replicate the experience in the log-lined sauna and temperature-adjustable ice bath.

Visit a Sámi village to meet a shaman

Sámis are the only recognised indigenous people of the European Union, and they live throughout the Nordic countries, including Finland. During a visit to a local Sámi village, you have the opportunity to meet a shaman and learn about Sámi culture, history and lifestyle. Hear stories of living side-by-side with nature, and be treated to a special joik performance, a traditional form of song in Sámi music.

Dine on the finest Finnish cuisine

A trip to Lapland wouldn’t be complete without sampling some traditional Finnish and Arctic cuisine. If you choose to stay at Octola, you’ll be treated to bespoke multi-course menus made from local ingredients – the signature sautéed reindeer is a must-try – and a carefully curated selection of Finnish wine. With the help of your personal butler, these gastronomic delights can be served in the intimate dining room, the rustic bar, in bed or even in a hot tub.
