The Essence of Marrakech, Morocco
From the intricate architecture of ancient palaces to the earthy aroma of bustling markets, this is Marrakech through the eyes of Travel Counsellors who know its rhythms and secrets. This seven night suggested itinerary gives you a real taste of the city – both inside the medina, the old walled city and UNESCO World Heritage Site – out through stunning gardens to the desert and mountains beyond.
Marrakech is experiencing something of a hotel explosion at the moment as Morocco gears up to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030. There are new boutique hotels opening on the city’s outskirts like Farasha Farmhouse, as well as in the High Atlas, including Eden Boutique Hotel and the wonderful Kasbah Tamadot, which reopened last year. And further afield, one of Marrakech’s most luxurious hotels, Royal Mansour, was recently joined by new properties in Casablanca and Tamuda Bay. We’ve chosen a beautiful riad as a peaceful retreat after days exploring the best of region.

The medina
Ease yourself into Marrakech with a guided tour to explore the architectural splendour of the Koutoubia Mosque, an iconic landmark with its impressive minaret, a symbol of the city’s historical and spiritual significance.
Your guide will take you through the details of the mosque, built in the 12th century while explaining its role in the Almohad dynasty. Afterwards, head to the nearby El Bahia Palace, known for its stunning courtyards, beautiful gardens, and finely crafted rooms with intricate tile works (known as Zellige) and elaborate wood carvings. The palace offers a glimpse into Morocco’s royal past.

The souks and square
Time to wander the lively, labyrinthine souks, a treasure trove of Moroccan craftmanship and culture, where the air is heavy with amber and spices, and vibrant textiles ripple in the breeze. You’ll find a maze of shops selling leather goods, textiles, ceramics, glassworks, wooden crafts and jewellery, alongside herbalists who practice traditional healing practices passed down through generations, crafted from local teas and essential oils. Expect to haggle!
Walk back through the streets of the old medina to Djemaa el-Fna, finding respite from the heat at one of the dozens of stalls bedecked with oranges, their juice squeezed before you. Around sunset, the square transforms into a theatrical stage, alive with the rhythm of local Berber troupes, drums, musicians, snake charmers, and the sizzle of street food. Escape the bustle at one of the many rooftop venues lining the square.

The gardens
Jardin Majorelle – famously owned by Yves Saint Laurent - is unmissable. A botanical and artistic triumph, you’ll find exotic plants, cacti and fountains with a cobalt, Cubist villa at its heart, now housing several museums. The gardens are also close to the historic city ramparts that encircle Marrakech. These ancient walls, built centuries ago, tell the story of the city’s rich past. Together, the serene beauty of the gardens and the timeless strength of the ramparts offer a glimpse into the enduring charm and history of Moroccan life.

The desert and mountains
The gardens won’t be the only chance to explore Morocco’s nature – far from it. You’ll venture into the Agafay Desert, a vast, arid expanse of rocky terrain and rolling dunes, where you’ll be welcomed at a traditional Berber village. Share a delicious, home-cooked lunch, offering a true taste of the region’s culture. Surrounded by the Atlas foothills, the desert’s stillness offers a tranquil retreat, providing a stark contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle. You’ll also have the chance to explore the landscapes from different perspectives; take to the skies on a piloted hot air balloon ride and enjoy an adrenalin-packed buggy ride through the desert, too.
Travel style
We’ve chosen Riad Kniza, a serene 18th century retreat in the heart of the medina, as your base. Its owner, a renowned antiques dealer and guide, restored the 11 rooms and courtyard beautifully; you feel more like a guest in a tasteful home than a hotel guest.
The central gathering point is the courtyard, designed with traditional Moroccan architecture - think trickling fountain, ornate mosaics, delicate wrought-iron details, and potted plants and palm trees. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy breakfast or tea, perhaps second only to the atmospheric roof terrace, perfect to unwind after a day in the city, especially as the sunset’s warm glow cast over the medina and mountains. The hammam is also a soothing space, your skin left soft and glowing after a kessa glove scrub and argan oil treatment.
