Climb to Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Revered by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World, this palace and fortress complex, dating back to the fifth century, is one of the most valuable historical monuments in Sri Lanka. On a vast rocky plateau (formed from the magma of an extinct volcano), climb the 1,200 steps for unbelievable panoramas over the surrounding jungle and the ancient fortification’s vast gardens and canals.

Spot leopards in Yala National Park
Yala National Park is arguably the best place to see Sri Lanka’s wild animals in their natural habitat. Herds of deer roam at will, keeping a wary eye on predators. Peacocks strut around, flaunting their colourful feathers, and flamingos flock on the lakes. Have your camera ready as you’re likely to see elephants gather at waterholes to drink, and, if you’re lucky, you may also see elusive leopards sunning themselves on the rocks.

Explore a cave monastery
A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, the cave monastery in Dambulla has five sanctuaries created for King Valagamba. It is the largest and best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. Marvel at its 157 statues (some of ancient kings, others of Vishnu and Ganesh) and its extensive frescoes dating back to the 15th century, which include a 47-foot-long image of a reclining Buddha. Expect more breathtaking views of the surrounding flatlands, with Sigiriya in the distance.

Walk the ramparts of Galle Dutch Fort
Be transported back in time as you explore this iconic 17th-century Dutch fortress in the heart of Galle. This World Heritage Site is one of Sri Lanka’s must-sees and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia, built by European occupiers. Walk along Galle Dutch Fort’s ramparts for views of the harbour and the famous old Galle lighthouse – the fort is chock-full of fascinating stories from the ancient spice trade and colonial invasions.

Catch a sunset or sunrise on Little Adam’s Peak
The enchanting hillside town of Ella is home to this trekking destination – a popular spot thanks to its breathtaking views that can be reached via a relatively short and easy hike. In just 30 minutes, it's possible to reach the summit of Little Adam’s Peak, where there’s a panoramic vista of the surrounding tea plantations, valleys, and Ella Rock. Visit at sunset or sunrise for an even more unforgettable experience.
