Your holiday begins in fascinating Mumbai, India’s largest city and home of Bollywood, where you’ll visit the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum) documenting the history of India from prehistoric to modern times, walk around the Kala Ghoda Chowk art district and neighbourhood, and take a city tour.

From here, your highlights will include the UNESCO-listed Pavagadh Archaeological Park with its chalcolithic sites, a hill fortress from an early Hindu capital, remains of the 16th-century Gujarati capital, and Jami Masjid in Champaner. Don’t miss Vadodara’s Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum in the Maharaja's Palace (the Lakshmi Vilas Palace), displaying Indian and European works of art collected by Maharaja Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

Next up is Rajasthan, bursting with colour and life, where you’ll take a tour of the lavish city of lakes Udaipur, visiting its City Palace with its courtyards, gardens, and intricate peacock mosaics. The ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur will beguile you with its sea of azure-painted buildings and its mesmerising Mehrangarh Fort (where you’ll feast on a courtyard barbecue lunch), as will Jaipur with its array of forts and palaces.

No holiday in northern India is complete without a visit to Agra Fort and the city’s world-famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal, while in nearby Ranthambore you’ll head off on a jungle safari in search of tigers. During your stop in Amritsar, you’ll soak in the sight of the glittering temple by night, enjoying an evening palki ceremony there, watching the Sikh holy book being carried in a gilded palanquin from the temple’s main sanctum into the Akal Takht inner chamber to rest for the night, accompanied by bugles and devotional singing.

As if all that wasn’t magical enough, you’ll ride the UNESCO-listed Toy Train via lush green valleys, rugged mountains, waterfalls, and pine forests, to the hill town of Shimla with its rich colonial history. You’ll finish up in Delhi, with time to see its epic sights from a cycle rickshaw ride.
