This unforgettable 14-night itinerary takes you through some of the island's most breathtaking destinations, where you’ll stay in high-end lodges and boutique retreats that place you right in the heart of this incredible scenery.

Days 1–2: Christchurch

Your trip begins in Christchurch, the gateway to the South Island. Known as the ‘Garden City’, it’s filled with parks, art galleries, and a creative energy that has flourished in recent years. Take a relaxing punt ride along the Avon River, wander the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and don’t miss the transitional ‘Cardboard Cathedral’ and the Riverside Market, where you can sample local delicacies and browse artisanal crafts.

Days 3–4: Kaikoura

From Christchurch, head north to Kaikoura, a stunning coastal town best known for its marine wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Step aboard a whale-watching tour to see the majestic sperm whales that call these waters home year-round. Depending on when you visit, you might also spot orcas or humpbacks. Back on land, indulge in the local speciality, crayfish (lobster), while absorbing views of the Kaikoura Ranges.

Days 5–6: Bay of Many Coves

Accessible only by boat, the Bay of Many Coves is a secluded gem within the Marlborough Sounds. Spend your days kayaking through pristine waters or lounging at your private retreat while soaking up the serene views of the surrounding bays. You can also explore nearby walking trails, such as the famous Queen Charlotte Track, or enjoy a Marlborough wine tasting session nearby. This stop is all about tranquillity and connecting with nature.

Day 7: Punakaiki

Make your way west to Punakaiki, home of the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. These striking limestone formations are a geological wonder and a must-see on any South Island trip. Enjoy walking trails along the rugged coastline or through the verdant Paparoa National Park, where lush native bush meets dramatic cliffs. Though your time in Punakaiki is brief, the breathtaking landscapes will leave a lasting impression.

Days 8–9: Franz Josef

Next, explore the world-famous Franz Josef Glacier, located on the edge of a lush temperate rainforest. Choose to take a guided hike onto the glacier's surface or elevate the experience with a scenic helicopter ride for panoramic views. After your glacier adventure, unwind in natural hot pools surrounded by verdant forest. The stark contrast of icy landscapes and rainforest ecosystems makes Franz Josef an unforgettable stop on this South Island exploration.

Days 10–11: Wanaka

Nestled by its namesake lake and framed by the Southern Alps, Wanaka strikes the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Explore Lake Wanaka by paddle board or kayak, or head to nearby Mount Aspiring National Park to hike through jaw-dropping alpine scenery. For wine enthusiasts, visit local vineyards to sample New Zealand’s renowned pinot noirs.

Days 12–13: Queenstown

Queenstown, the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’, is alive with energy. Opt for high-octane activities like jet boating, bungee jumping, or paragliding, or take a more leisurely approach with a lake cruise on the iconic TSS Earnslaw.  For a touch of luxury, enjoy a wine tour of the Gibbston Valley, known for its premium pinot noirs, or take the Skyline Gondola for sweeping vistas of the Remarkables mountain range.

Day 14: Dunedin

Your adventure concludes in the historic city of Dunedin. Known for its rich Scottish heritage, gothic architecture, and wildlife, this city offers a fascinating blend of culture and nature. Visit Larnach Castle, the only castle in New Zealand, or take a tour of the Otago Peninsula to spot albatrosses and sea lions. Dunedin's charm ensures your trip ends on a high note before making the long journey home where you’ll have time to reflect on all you have seen and experienced.
