A Transatlantic Adventure: Cruising in Style on the Norwegian Escape

03 March 2025

Back in November, I embarked on an unforgettable journey aboard the Norwegian Escape for my first-ever transatlantic cruise. Having sailed on the Escape earlier in the year, I felt comfortable navigating the ship but was filled with anticipation about what lay ahead—a six-day, six-night voyage across the Atlantic from Madeira to Antigua. Would there be rough seas? Chilly winds? Sunny skies? With no way of knowing, I packed my trusty 23kg suitcase full of clothing options and set out for Barcelona, where my adventure would begin. Setting Sail from Barcelona - After a smooth boarding process, I settled into my port-side club balcony suite, a choice I had made strategically to maximize sunlight during the journey from east to west. Clever planning paid off as I basked in the warmth of sunny Barcelona during the sail-away. Although the port itself wasn’t particularly picturesque, it was thrilling to be underway. European Stops: Cartagena, Málaga, and Funchal - The itinerary included three European stops, each offering unique experiences. First up was Cartagena, where I enjoyed an unstructured day, soaking in the charm of cobblestone streets and vibrant local culture. In Málaga, I participated in an extraordinary private food tour, sampling local delicacies at bustling markets and tapas restaurants. The last stop before crossing the Atlantic was Funchal, Madeira, where I explored the area with a Hop-On, Hop-Off bus and indulged in a quintessentially touristy cable car ride to the gardens, followed by an exhilarating basket ride—an absolute must-do! The Atlantic Crossing: Calm, Sunny, and Blissful - As we left Funchal, anticipation filled the air—what would the next six days at sea bring? To our delight, we were greeted with calm seas, sunny skies, and temperatures consistently over 26°C. It felt as if we were cruising the Mediterranean in August! The unseasonably perfect weather created the ideal setting for sunbathing and evening strolls along the open promenade and upper decks. It was a crossing to remember, and I couldn't help but wonder if I’d been spoiled for any future transatlantic voyages. Caribbean Delights - After the crossing, the cruise concluded with stops in Antigua, Puerto Rico, and the Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, each offering their own slice of paradise. Life Aboard the Norwegian Escape - The Norwegian Escape proved to be the perfect vessel for this journey. With its well-designed solo cabin spaces and relaxed atmosphere, it catered to a diverse group of travelers. The ship's many venues—including bars, the casino, theatre, and Headliners (a piano bar and comedy venue)—provided endless entertainment. Highlights of the shows included the captivating Choir of Man in the main theatre and a Fleetwood Mac tribute in Syd Norman’s Pour House. Dining was another standout feature - I frequented specialty venues like Bayamo (Seafood), Le Bistro (French), and Cagney’s Steakhouse, with outdoor tables adding an extra touch of magic to meals. Pre-dinner drinks at the Prime Meridian bar were a personal favourite, with the Black Forest Martini earning a special mention. Final Thoughts - This transatlantic cruise was nothing short of spectacular. The Norwegian Escape’s cheerful crew, engaging entertainment, and thoughtfully planned itinerary made the journey unforgettable. Paired with the stunning weather, it was a dream voyage that will always hold a special place in my heart. If you’re considering a transatlantic cruise, don’t hesitate—this adventure might just become your trip of a lifetime!

A Trip to Singapore During the F1 Grand Prix: A Weekend of Speed, Lights, and Culture

17 January 2025

Last September, I found myself boarding a plane bound for one of the most iconic and electrifying cities in the world: Singapore. But this wasn't just any ordinary trip. I was headed to the Lion City to experience one of the most thrilling events on the global sports calendar—the Singapore Grand Prix. As a fan of motorsport, this was the perfect opportunity to combine my passion for racing with the allure of Singapore’s rich culture and stunning skyline. The weekend was a whirlwind of excitement, unforgettable moments, and the unique magic that only Singapore can offer. Arriving in Singapore: A City Like No Other Landing in Singapore, I was immediately struck by how modern and clean the city is. The air was warm and inviting, and the skyline gleamed under the afternoon sun. The Grand Prix had taken over the entire city, with the Marina Bay Circuit—a unique street circuit that winds through the heart of the city—dominating the landscape. There’s something special about watching a Formula 1 race set against the backdrop of towering skyscrapers, historic landmarks, and a city that never seems to sleep. The city felt alive, bustling with energy as locals and tourists alike anticipated the weekend’s events. Street vendors lined the roads, and there was an electric buzz in the air. As I made my way to my hotel, I could already see the F1 branding everywhere, from the flags waving along the streets to the ads plastered on the sides of buildings. This was no ordinary weekend—it was a celebration. The Singapore Grand Prix: An Unforgettable Experience Race day arrived, and I was ready. The Singapore Grand Prix is unique in many ways, but the most notable feature is that it’s the only night street race on the Formula 1 calendar. As the sun began to set and the track lights flickered to life, the atmosphere shifted from vibrant daytime energy to the intense and dramatic glow of a night race. There’s something magical about watching the F1 cars zoom past under the night sky, with the city’s illuminated skyline towering in the background. I was fortunate to have a ticket that offered a fantastic view of the track. The roar of the engines as the cars passed by was unlike anything I had ever heard before. The speed, the precision, the intense focus of the drivers—it was mesmerizing. Singapore’s street circuit is known for its challenging turns and narrow streets, making the race even more exciting. Every lap felt like a battle, and the entire experience left me on the edge of my seat. But the Grand Prix isn’t just about the racing. The event is a complete experience that draws fans from all around the world. Between practice, qualifying, and the main race, I had the chance to explore the many activities around the track including live performances by The Corrs, Kylie Minogue and Lenny Kravitz. There were also pop-up food stalls, and even fashion shows. The energy was contagious, and it felt like the whole city was celebrating the event. The Unforgettable Night Views One of the most breath-taking parts of the weekend was simply walking around the city after the race. The skyline, bathed in the glow of the race lights, took on a surreal beauty. The iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel loomed above me, while the Singapore Flyer Ferris wheel provided a stunning view of the entire city from above. After the race was over, I spent hours wandering around the bay, soaking in the spectacular night views and the lingering excitement in the air. Singapore is a city that thrives at night, and the Grand Prix only adds to the allure. Whether you’re sipping cocktails in a rooftop bar or strolling along the waterfront, there’s a sense of liveliness that’s impossible to ignore. The city was alive with energy, and the lights of the F1 race were a fitting symbol of the city’s vibrant spirit. Exploring Singapore Beyond the Grand Prix While the Grand Prix was undoubtedly the highlight of my trip, Singapore offered so much more than just racing. The following day, I ventured into the heart of the city to explore its cultural and natural wonders. From the Gardens by the Bay, with its futuristic Supertree Grove, to the bustling streets of Chinatown, I was amazed by the mix of old and new that defines Singapore. I couldn’t resist visiting the iconic Hawker Centres, where I indulged in local dishes like laksa, satay, and chili crab. The food in Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, and every bite was a delightful adventure in itself. Whether you're savouring a bowl of Hainanese chicken rice or tasting a bowl of rich, spicy curry, Singapore’s culinary scene is an experience in its own right. Another highlight was my visit to Sentosa Island, where I relaxed on the sandy beaches, enjoyed the view from the cable cars, and explored the attractions. The blend of urban excitement and natural beauty made Singapore a destination that was both thrilling and peaceful, offering something for every type of traveller. A Truly Unforgettable Trip As my time in Singapore came to a close, I couldn’t help but reflect on just how extraordinary this trip had been. The Singapore Grand Prix isn’t just a race—it’s a celebration of speed, technology, and the spirit of competition. But it’s also a celebration of the city itself—a city that combines innovation, history, and culture in a way that few places on Earth can. Whether you’re a motorsport fan or not, Singapore during the F1 weekend is an experience like no other. The city pulsates with energy, the lights shine brighter than ever, and the air is thick with anticipation. From the exhilarating race to the after-party celebrations, the incredible food, and the fascinating sights, every moment was unforgettable. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend experiencing Singapore during the Grand Prix—it’s an adventure you won’t soon forget.
