Exploring the Heart of Puglia – My Italian Adventure
Monopoli – 3 nights This gorgeous seaside town instantly stole my heart. With its working fishing port, two lovely little beaches (Porto Bianco and Porto Rosso), and a dreamy old town full of character, it was the perfect base. We wandered through cobbled streets, watched the boats bobbing in the harbour, and soaked up the golden hour glow with lazy evening strolls.
One of the highlights was hiring bikes and cycling along the coast to Polignano a Mare – a scenic, easy ride that took about 1 hour 30 minutes (with lots of photo stops along the way, of course!). Once we arrived, we joined a 2-hour boat tour of the famous caves, which was absolutely stunning – the water was so clear it didn’t feel real. After that, we stopped for a long, leisurely lunch before cycling back to Monopoli.
Alberobello We set off early to visit this postcard-perfect town, known for its fairytale trulli houses. It was like stepping into a storybook – completely magical and so unique. I don’t think I stopped taking photos the entire time we were there!
Cisternino Small, authentic and full of soul – I loved wandering the whitewashed streets and stopping for lunch at a local butcher’s, where they grill traditional bombette (mouthwatering meat skewers) to order. So simple, so good.
Locorotondo As pretty as its name! This charming hilltop town has winding alleyways, geranium-filled balconies and panoramic views that go on for miles. We stopped for a glass of local wine and just soaked it all in.
Ostuni Also known as the “White City”, Ostuni is perched high on a hill and looks absolutely striking from a distance. Up close, it’s full of charm, history, and lovely hidden corners. A great final stop for a gelato and a stroll through its maze-like streets.
Otranto - 3 nights A little further south, but totally worth the extra distance. With its crystal-clear waters, relaxed vibe and beautiful historic centre, Otranto was the perfect way to end the trip. It’s one of those places that makes you want to slow down and just stay a while.
Final thoughts? Puglia was everything I hoped it would be – and more. Beautiful towns, amazing food, friendly locals, and scenery that just keeps on giving. Whether you want beach days, cultural sights, foodie finds or just a slower pace, this region really does have it all.
If Puglia is calling your name and you’d like help planning your own Italian escape, I’d love to help.
