Wellness & Wildlife in Sri Lanka
My visit in March 2025 focused on exploring Sri Lanka’s Wellness Retreats and Wildlife experiences. I was accompanied by my great-nephew Callum, a passionate fitness enthusiast, whose perspective added valuable insight into the wellness offerings from a younger, health-focused traveller’s point of view.
Currently, Sri Lankan Airlines is the only airline offering nonstop service from the UK to Colombo, while other carriers transit via the Middle East or Europe.
On arrival, we were whisked to a private lounge, where our luggage was collected and passports stamped. We exchanged currency and enjoyed snacks and drinks before meeting our private driver, Tharu, who stayed with us throughout the journey. He offered rich insights into Sri Lankan culture, history, and local life.
Our journey began in Neboda (1hr 30mins drive), a peaceful village of coconut plantations and rural charm. Here, we watched monkeys in the trees, learned about cinnamon farming, and met a local Rubber Tapper. We stayed at GLENROSS LIVING, which offered complimentary daily yoga classes, private sessions, and training in a scenic rainforest gym.
Next, we headed to Galle (1hr 30mins drive) and stayed at GALLE FORT HOUSE, located within the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, known for its Dutch colonial architecture and ocean views. Walking the fort walls at sunset is a must-do.
Continuing along the coast to Tangalle (1hr 30mins), we stayed at KAYAAM HOUSE, a luxury wellness retreat with golden beaches and a relaxed vibe. Though the sea was too rough for swimming, we enjoyed daily yoga and a tranquil pool with ocean views.
A 2hr drive brought us to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s best-known wildlife sanctuary. We went on thrilling safaris in different park zones and spotted elephants, wild boar, and exotic birds — though leopards eluded us!
Our first night in Yala was at TRIBE YALA, a luxury eco-camp offering safari tents and a fully off-grid experience. Dining under the stars and breakfasting in the treetops was pure magic.
The next night we stayed at UGA CHENA HUTS (40mins away), a luxurious eco-resort offering a blend of safari adventure and beachfront luxury. Our spacious private hut featured modern comforts, lush surroundings, and its own plunge pool.
Next, we took a scenic 4hr drive inland to the cool hills of Haputale, where mist rolls over emerald tea fields. We visited the iconic Lipton Seat and explored plantations by tuk tuk — an absolute highlight. We stayed 2 nights at THOTALAGALA HOTEL, a colonial-style boutique bungalow with afternoon tea, hot water bottles at bedtime, and a charming library. The service and food were exceptional.
Our journey continued 4hrs to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural heart. En route, we passed waterfalls, roadside monkeys, and local cattle herders. Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth and vibrant traditional dance shows.
We stayed at SANTANI, a luxury wellness resort in the hills, offering a minimalist design, Ayurvedic therapies, and breathtaking rainforest views. The sub-terranean spa rooms had only three walls, immersing you in birdsong and nature — an unforgettable experience.
Sri Lanka’s culinary scene is just as diverse, with bold spices and influences from Indian, Malay, Dutch, and Portuguese cuisines. Every meal amazed us — from tropical fruit platters and fluffy pancakes at breakfast to salmon timbale for lunch and grilled para fish for dinner.
TOP TIP – While many wellness resorts are exceptional, not all have gyms. If fitness facilities are important to you, speak to me for tailored recommendations.
Whether you're drawn by nature, wellness, history, or the warmth of the people, Sri Lanka offers a journey that truly touches both the soul and the senses — and that’s a promise!
