Ship Visit: A Day Aboard Oceania Mariner in Southampton
Everywhere you look, there’s stunning artwork -paintings, sculptures, and thoughtful touches that make the ship feel more like a boutique hotel than a cruise liner. In fact, Mariner houses an art collection worth over $5 million. If you’re curious to know more, you can even grab an iPad from reception and take yourself on a self-guided art tour around the ship. It’s such a lovely way to slow down and take in the atmosphere.
One of my favourite parts of the visit was The Culinary Center. It’s a proper hands-on cooking school at sea! Guests can roll up their sleeves and cook alongside expert chefs, learning regional recipes inspired by the places they’re about to explore. Picture yourself creating a fresh Italian pasta dish using local produce after a morning in a Tuscan market -then enjoying it with a glass of wine, all without leaving the ship. It’s such a brilliant way to connect with the destinations through food.
And if you’re a foodie, this is your kind of cruise. Oceania features not one but two Master Chefs of France, Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, as Executive Culinary Directors. Their influence is seen (and tasted!) across the ship, from elegant main dining to more casual venues. Everything is beautifully presented, full of flavour, and genuinely thoughtful.
Something else that sets Oceania apart is its itineraries. Because the ships are smaller, like the Mariner, they can sail right into ports the larger ships have to skip -think tucked-away harbours, medieval coastal towns, and city centres where you step off the ship and you’re right there. Even better, Oceania often stays in port longer, with late departures or even overnight stays, so guests can really experience each destination. No rushing, no ticking boxes.
Their slogan is “Your World. Your Way.”, and after spending a day onboard, I completely get it. The atmosphere is relaxed but elegant, the service is warm and intuitive, and everything is designed so you can enjoy your holiday your way, whether that’s out exploring or curled up with a book.
Speaking of which, I have to mention the library. It’s genuinely one of the most beautiful spaces on the ship. Dark wood, leather armchairs, floor-to-ceiling shelves -like a classic private members’ club at sea. It's the perfect quiet spot to unwind with a novel, a travel guide, or just your thoughts.
We also had a peek at the accommodation. The veranda staterooms are light, stylish, and spacious -but the standout is absolutely the Owner’s Suite, designed by Ralph Lauren Home. Think polished mahogany, navy and cream tones, crisp white linens, and a hint of yachting glamour. It’s luxurious without being over-the-top -just timeless and elegant, like the rest of the ship.
All in all, Oceania Mariner offers a truly refined cruising experience -art, cuisine, beautiful design, and destinations that you can really dive into. Whether you're sailing for a week or a world cruise, it's easy to see why guests come back again and again.
