One of our first stops was the beautiful fishing village of Siglufjörður. Known historically as the Herring Capital of the World, this small town has a fascinating past.

We stayed at the Siglo Hotel, a modern waterfront property right on the marina. With stylish rooms, an outdoor spa, and a cosy atmosphere, it was the perfect place to unwind after exploring.

Visit the Herring Era Museum – Iceland’s largest maritime museum, offering a glimpse into the town’s fishing heritage. Enjoy the Views – Siglufjörður is surrounded by dramatic mountains and fjords, making it a photographer’s dream.
Akureyri – The Capital of the North
Our journey continued to Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest town. With colourful houses, lively cafés, boutique shops, and excellent restaurants, it’s a vibrant base for exploring the north.
Top Attractions in Akureyri
Akureyri Church – A striking landmark that overlooks the town. Akureyri Swimming Pool – A favourite with locals, complete with outdoor hot tubs. The Forest Lagoon – A highlight of our trip. This geothermal spa overlooks Eyjafjörður (Iceland’s longest fjord) and is surrounded by pine and birch trees. With saunas, hot-and-cold pools, and infinity views, it’s one of the most unique spas in Iceland.
Natural Wonders in Northern Iceland
Goðafoss Waterfall One of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, Goðafoss is known as the Waterfall of the Gods. It drops 12 metres across a wide horseshoe-shaped cascade. According to legend, in the year 1000, Norse god statues were cast into the falls as Iceland embraced Christianity.
Whale Watching in Akureyri Whale watching in Eyjafjörður is a must. Even if the whales don’t appear, the fjord’s dramatic scenery makes the trip unforgettable. This is Iceland’s deepest fjord, and the surrounding landscapes are breathtaking from the water.
Husky Sledding near Lake Mývatn One of the most unique experiences in Iceland is husky sledding across a frozen lake near Lake Mývatn. Few places in Iceland offer this activity, and it was a true bucket-list moment. Meeting the dogs at the kennels afterwards made it even more special.
Snowmobiling Adventures For thrill-seekers, snowmobiling across the snowy landscapes near Lake Mývatn is an adrenaline-filled way to explore Iceland’s dramatic terrain.
Chasing the Northern Lights Of course, one of the most unforgettable experiences was witnessing the Northern Lights. On two evenings, the skies above Akureyri and Siglufjörður came alive with shimmering green and purple auroras. Seeing this natural wonder was the perfect reminder of Iceland’s magic — and a memory we’ll treasure forever.
