An enriching journey through Colombia

7 nights from £4,389 per person based on 2 sharing

Sail along Colombia’s legendary Magdalena River on a seven-night voyage aboard the AmaMagdalena, AmaWaterways’ modern river ship designed especially for this route. Starting in Barranquilla and finishing in Cartagena, you’ll move through towns that carry the country’s stories, like Mompox, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where time has barely touched the streets, and Santa Bárbara de Pinto, where family traditions of music and craft are passed down through generations. Each day brings a fresh mix of river scenery, real encounters with local people, and the colourful energy that Colombia is known for.
  • In Barranquilla, the country’s most famous festival comes alive just for AmaWaterways guests. Expect drummers, dancers, and the kind of costumes normally only seen during the annual Carnaval parades. It’s not a staged version; you’ll feel the heat of the rhythms up close, hear the call-and-response chants, and get a genuine sense of how much this tradition means to locals.

  • Tucked between the river and wetlands, Mompox feels like a step back into the 16th century. Stroll past Spanish-era churches, workshops where artisans handcraft delicate silver filigree jewellery, and quiet plazas shaded by mango trees. In the evening, the streets come alive with an outdoor jazz performance - a local tradition that is not to be missed.

  • In Santa Bárbara de Pinto, you’ll see everyday skills on display, from rolling tobacco leaves to net making, both essential trades in riverside life. Later, back on the AmaMagdalena, a group of families from El Banco join the ship to share their music. This is the birthplace of cumbia, and you’ll hear the rhythms played live with traditional instruments while families tell stories about how the songs connect generations.

  • Between excursions, make the most of your ship, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies for river views, and well-designed spaces to unwind. Dinner is prepared with regional touches, so expect fresh tropical fruit, local fish, and Colombian coffee alongside international dishes. After dark, the lounge becomes the hub, whether it’s a local band stepping in for the evening, a cocktail tasting session, or simply a relaxed chat with fellow travellers.
