Embark on a week-long cruise aboard the MS Estrela, gliding from Porto into the heart of the Douro Valley. You’ll start in Porto, one of Europe’s most atmospheric riverside cities. Stroll through the Ribeira district’s narrow cobbled streets, see the tiled façade of São Bento Station, and cross the Dom Luís I Bridge for sweeping river views. A visit to the port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia is a must, where you can sample ruby, tawny, and white ports in the very warehouses where they age.
One of the most scenic stretches of the cruise brings you to Pinhão, known for its terraced vineyards that rise up from the riverbanks. Here, you’ll visit a traditional quinta for dinner, where dishes like roast suckling pig and caldo verde soup are paired with local wines. You’ll also have time to walk through the village itself, where the train station is decorated with blue-and-white azulejos.
Midway through the trip, the ship pauses while you head inland to Salamanca, a UNESCO-listed city with a historic university dating back to the 13th century. You’ll see the Plaza Mayor, often called Spain’s most beautiful square, and explore the sandstone old town before enjoying a flamenco performance over lunch with classic tapas like jamón ibérico and Manchego cheese.
