From the Golden Triangle to Kerala & Mumbai: My India Adventure
India has been on my list for years, a country that feels more like a whole world in one. From the vibrant chaos of Delhi to the calm backwaters of Kerala and the buzz of Mumbai, this trip was everything I’d hoped for (and more!).
What a start! Flew Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow to Delhi — scheduled for 9h05 but landed in just 7h25! I went for Economy Delight for the extra legroom, and it was absolutely worth it. Great service, comfy seats, and a smooth flight all the way.
Day 1 – Delhi: First Impressions
Nothing quite prepares you for Delhi. We began with a walking tour through Old Delhi’s maze of alleyways, temples, tiny workshops, and the spice market bursting with colour and scent. A rickshaw ride gave us a front-row seat to the city’s chaos and charm.
In the afternoon, we explored Humayun’s Tomb and India Gate before ending the day at the Red Fort for its light and sound show, a brilliant way to see the city’s history come alive. Back at the hotel, that first cold beer hit the spot after a whirlwind first day.
Day 2 – Jaipur: The Pink City
Road-tripped to Jaipur with our brilliant driver, Hunny. Highlights of the day included Jantar Mantar’s giant instruments, the regal City Palace, and Amer Fort looking out across the hills. Snapped the famous Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) before checking into the stunning Samode Haveli for a Rajasthani feast.
Days 3–4 – Agra: The Taj Awaits
Next stop, Agra. Our guide Deepak brought the Agra Fort’s stories to life, palaces, courtyards, and views straight across to the Taj Mahal. Dinner that night came with a view of the Taj glowing in the distance.
The following morning, we were up at 5:30am for the big moment, sunrise at the Taj Mahal. It was everything and more. The colours changing with the light, the peaceful stillness… nothing can truly capture that feeling.
Day 6 – Kochi, Kerala: Tropical Vibes
A short flight south and suddenly, it’s a different India. Kochi feels laid-back, lush, and full of charm. Stayed at the Eighth Bastion Hotel, a beautiful colonial-style property.
Explored the city with our local guide, Sanjay, from St. Francis Church and the Chinese fishing nets to the Dutch Palace. The traditional laundry was fascinating (and seriously hard work!). Later, wandered through Jew Town’s historic streets before calling it a day.
Days 7–10 – Munnar & Periyar: Mountains & Spices
From Kochi we wound up into the hills of Munnar, where the temperature dropped and the views were breathtaking. Stayed at Windermere Estate, all misty mornings, tea plantations, and total peace.
Walked through the tea fields, watched the leaves being processed, and enjoyed afternoon tea with clouds below us. Then on to Spice Village in Periyar, surrounded by lush gardens. A spice garden tour and a Kalaripayattu martial arts show rounded off an incredible few days in the hills.
Days 11–12 – Kumarakom: Life on the Water
Reached Coconut Lagoon by boat (the only way in!) and loved every moment. Our cottage looked out onto the backwaters, palm-fringed canals, bird calls, and the gentle rhythm of daily life.
A sunset cruise, a canoe trip through narrow waterways, and incredible Keralan food made these days pure relaxation.
Days 13–14 – Marari Beach: Coastal Bliss
Next stop: Marari Beach Resort, thatched cottages in tropical gardens, waves crashing nearby, and sunsets that stopped us in our tracks. Slow mornings, long walks, and total unwind mode.
Days 15–16 – Mumbai: City Buzz
Finished in style at the Trident Hotel, Mumbai. Explored the Gateway of India, Gandhi’s old home, and Dhobi Ghat, the world’s biggest open-air laundry. Even stumbled across a Bollywood shoot!
Wrapped up with a walk along Marine Drive, where the lights curve around the bay like a glittering “Queen’s Necklace.” A perfect farewell to India.
