It's Nice To Meet You

My mission is to create personalised, authentic & accessible travel experiences. Built with care. Delivered with a smile.

Why book with me?
I have 25 years’ experience in travel, wearing many hats. From travel agent to tour operator, from cruise lines to airlines, train lines and airports. I’ve visited over 100 countries & flown countless airlines. I’ve lived in Greece, Turkey, Miami and Australia and know all the best bits. I’ve backpacked South Africa, Thailand, Laos, Bali & Gili Islands, Australia & New Zealand and know where to find the authentic experiences. I’m an expert in Royal Caribbean and Azamara Club Cruises as I worked for them for over 7 years.

I’ve camped & campervanned around Australia, France & Scotland for those who seek awe inspiring landscapes. I’ve bungeed, paraglided, skydived, Zorb balled, mountain biked, sailed catamaran, helicoptered inside a volcano & experienced many more activities around the world and excursions I can personally recommend.

I’ve danced at the local bars and found local flavours. I’ve watched dazzling sunsets and know where to find them. I’ve drank wine on the vineyards with just the birds to listen to & nursed cocktails at the beaches you dream of.

Most importantly, I know where to find information that’s even more up to date than my simple memories, with our fantastic TC community with extensive knowledge on just about anywhere. I use this knowledge to match destinations, activities and ways of transport to you, so you will always want me to take care of you. Each and every time you wish to travel.

My difference.
I make sure every detail of your trip is thought about. I want to get to know you and what you really love about travel. Then build an itinerary with anything; hotels, flights, car hire and cruises, to the little stuff like transfers, check-ins, seat reservations, accessibility requirements and of course dealing with any issues along the way.

Accessible Travel.
I specialise in accessible travel and trying to make travel inclusive to all. I enjoy helping people with disabilities navigate the complexities that travel can often throw in their path and help avoid stressful situations. I do this by taking care of all the details, bookings, messages to suppliers, special requests and thinking about the journey from door to door. I have booked lots of happy clients with accessibility needs to Orlando, for example, where there's lots and lots to plan before you go!

Full Financial Protection.
Travel Counsellors will provide you with full financial protection through the TC Financial Trust, insuring your travel & trip. You’re safe with us should something happen, your money won’t be at risk and I will be here to support you seven days a week. That’s part of the value that I create for you. There’s also a 24/7 Duty Office telephone line for emergencies whilst overseas.

Whatever it is you enjoy, I look forward to helping make it happen.

Jubilant Japan: A Journey Through Time, Tradition, and Technology - Part two.

01 April 2024

Last time, we started our journey in Tokyo and made our way to Hakone National Park, on what’s known as the Japanese Garden Route. Today we shall continue on our way, and we pick up our journey as we arrive in Kyoto. Kyoto: A Journey Through Time Step back in time as we journey to Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Here, centuries-old temples, majestic palaces, and meticulously manicured gardens await at every turn. Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, whose shimmering façade reflects in the still waters of its surrounding pond. Wander through the enchanting streets of Gion, Kyoto's historic geisha district, where traditional tea houses and wooden machiya townhouses transport you to a bygone era. You can do an evening foodie tour here which is very popular with my clients. Don't miss the opportunity to witness a mesmerizing geisha performance, where grace and elegance are elevated to an art form. Here you can also go see a traditional sword dance, Kembu. Here you can be immersed in the art of the samurai, trying out the robes and watching their ritualistic dance. Only 30 mins away is Osaka, and what comes with Osaka is Universal Studios Japan. So, if you are just looking for a day trip, it can be done from Kyoto in a day. Lots of my clients did this, whilst others have gone on to stay in Osaka itself (but perhaps on the way back to Tokyo, later)! Osaka: Gastronomic Delights and Urban Excitement From Kyoto, we make our way to Osaka, the culinary capital of Japan. Known for its vibrant street food scene and lively atmosphere, Osaka is a paradise for food lovers and thrill-seekers alike. Indulge in mouth-watering delights at Dotonbori, Osaka's iconic food street, where sizzling okonomiyaki, crispy takoyaki, and savory kushikatsu tempt your taste buds at every corner. Then, take a ride on the giant Ferris wheel at Tempozan Harbor Village, where panoramic views of the city skyline await. And for an adrenaline-pumping experience, head to Universal Studios Japan, where blockbuster movies come to life in thrilling rides and immersive attractions. From the wizarding world of Harry Potter to the heart-pounding excitement of Jurassic Park, there's something for everyone at this world-class theme park, and probably more for the older kids and teens (who am I kidding, me, it would be great for me)! Lol. Hiroshima: A Journey of Remembrance and Hope Our journey continues in Hiroshima, a city with a poignant history and a resilient spirit. Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a solemn tribute to the victims of the atomic bomb, and pay your respects at the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome, a haunting reminder of the devastating impact of war. But amidst the tragedy, Hiroshima is also a city of hope and renewal. Explore the vibrant streets of Hiroshima's downtown area, where bustling markets and lively izakayas offer a glimpse into the city's vibrant culture and resilience. Personally, I think it’s all a bit mental down here, and I like some time away from hustle and bustle. So, if you’re anything like me, it is recommended to stay on the island off Hiroshima, called Miyajima, also known as Itsukushima. It is famous for its iconic red torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide, creating a breath-taking scene that has made it one of Japan's most photographed landmarks. Miyajima is also home to the stunning Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as scenic hiking trails, serene temples, and friendly deer that roam freely throughout the island. Visitors can reach Miyajima by ferry from Hiroshima, making it a popular day escape from the city. From here, our journey concludes back in Tokyo usually, for the flight home. It is always arranged to stay one final night in Tokyo before heading home, or on to your next destination. Some people as mentioned earlier, have opted to visit Osaka on the way back to break up the journey and do a full loop. However, it’s easy to do anything in any order really thanks to Japan’s fab railways. Getting Around: Japan's Efficient Railway System Throughout our journey, we've traversed the length and breadth of Japan with ease, thanks to the country's world-renowned railway system. From the lightning-fast shinkansen bullet trains to the local commuter lines, Japan's trains are clean, efficient, and punctual – a testament to the country's commitment to excellence. With a Japan Rail Pass in hand, you can enjoy unlimited travel on JR trains, making it easy to explore multiple destinations without breaking the bank. What’s more, my all-time-favourite feature is Japan's luggage forwarding system, known as "takkyubin" or "yubin-haikyu," allows you to conveniently send your luggage from one location to another, such as from your hotel to the next destination or to the airport, with ease. Travellers simply arrange for their luggage to be picked up at one location and delivered to another, typically within the same day or overnight. This service is widely available across Japan and offers a hassle-free way for everyone to explore the country without the burden of carrying heavy bags. As someone who rarely packs light, and hates lugging things around like a pack-horse, this is music to my ears. When to go. For how long. Great Pairings. And how to book. If you aren't hitting the ski slopes, March to May and September to November are generally considered the best times to visit the country for pleasant weather. The most expensive times are: The Golden Week (end April-early May), Obon (mid-August) and Christmas/New year's. You'll want to avoid the rainy season that starts in mid-June, followed by awfully hot and humid summer. The typhoon season usually ends by mid-September. Spring and autumn are great. Great places to pair with Japan if you want a stop off are Bali or Thailand for great beach extensions and Dubai, Doha, Qatar, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore all make for great city stopovers. If you want to see how long to go for. I recommend the below as a guideline: • Tokyo – 3 to 5 nights • Hakone – 2 nights usually enough • Kyoto – 4 to 6 nights (depending on whether you do Universal Studios as a day trip from here) • Osaka – 2 to 4 nights (if you visiting city and doing Universal) • Hiroshima – 2 to 3 nights is enough Pack your bags, embark on an adventure of a lifetime, and discover the jubilant spirit of Japan! Call or email me to get planning.

Jubilant Japan: A Journey Through Time, Tradition, and Technology

01 April 2024

Recently I have been inundated with enquiries to Japan, thanks to a marvellous influencer marketing campaign I took part in with Sara Davies (Dragon’s Den). Sara travelled to Japan with us, and tried loads of cool stuff with her family! Thanks to the interest, I feel now is a great time to write about Japan which has quickly become one of my busiest selling destinations, along with Italy, Thailand and Singapore. So, get a brew, sit down, and let me take you on a two-part journey to Jubilant Japan. Part One. In the heart of East Asia lies a land of enchantment, where ancient tradition dances with modern innovation, and every corner tells a tale of resilience and jubilance. Welcome to Japan – a country that beckons travellers with its kaleidoscope of experiences, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, from the majestic beauty of Mount Fuji to the poignant history of Hiroshima. Tokyo: Where Tradition Meets Technology. Our adventure begins in Tokyo, the pulsating heart of Japan. Here, skyscrapers tower over ancient temples and neon lights illuminate historic streets. Dive into the vibrant chaos of Shibuya Crossing, where a sea of humanity ebbs and flows with the rhythm of the city. Indulge your senses in the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, where the freshest seafood delights await. For a taste of traditional Japan amidst the modernity, visit the tranquil oasis of Asakusa. Explore the majestic Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, and stroll down Nakamise-dori, a street lined with centuries-old shops selling souvenirs and snacks. Perhaps watch a sumo wrestling tournament, or try your hand at the taiko drums which have been so popular with my clients. If manga is your thing, touring Tokyo's manga scene offers an exhilarating immersion into the vibrant world of Japanese pop culture. Akihabara, known as the "Electric Town," buzzes with the energy of neon lights and bustling crowds, offering a maze of speciality shops and manga cafes where enthusiasts can find rare collectibles and the latest releases. Manga cafes provide a cozy sanctuary for indulging in favourite comics, while the Studio Ghibli Museum offers a whimsical journey into the iconic animation studio's enchanting creations. Character cafes and themed restaurants allow visitors to dine alongside beloved characters, creating unforgettable experiences amidst the whimsical decor and themed menu items. From exploring bustling districts to immersing oneself in themed attractions, touring Tokyo's manga scene promises an adventure filled with excitement and discovery. And no visit to Tokyo would be complete without a trip to the happiest place on earth – Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, offering enchanting escapes into the realms of fantasy and adventure, captivating visitors with their immersive worlds and iconic attractions. Tokyo Disneyland, inspired by its counterparts in the United States, brings beloved Disney characters to life against the backdrop of enchanting lands, thrilling rides, and dazzling parades. From the enchanting Cinderella Castle to the whimsical rides of Fantasyland, Tokyo Disneyland delights guests of all ages with its magic and charm. In contrast, Tokyo DisneySea offers a unique maritime-themed park with a focus on exploration, adventure, and storytelling. Visitors can embark on epic journeys through seven themed ports, including Mediterranean Harbor and Arabian Coast, and experience breathtaking attractions such as Journey to the Center of the Earth and Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull. With its immersive theming, spectacular shows, and thrilling rides, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea promise unforgettable experiences that capture the imagination and ignite the spirit of adventure in all who visit. It’s time to board the train, and head for Hakone National Park. With a hop, skip and a shinkansen you will be there in no time at all. Hakone: Soak in Serenity and Scenery. Escape the urban hustle and bustle as we journey to Hakone, a picturesque town nestled in the shadow of Mount Fuji. Known for its hot springs and stunning views of the iconic volcano, Hakone offers a serene retreat from the chaos of city life. A short train ride (2hrs or less) from Tokyo puts you in an entirely different backdrop. Hakone National Park passes offer visitors a convenient and cost-effective way to explore the stunning natural beauty and cultural attractions of this picturesque region. With various options available, including the Hakone Free Pass and Hakone Kamakura Pass, travellers can enjoy unlimited access to a range of transportation modes within the park. My clients all took the Free Pass option, which got them access to everything, from the iconic Hakone Ropeway, which offers breathtaking aerial views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi, to the scenic Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, which traverses the tranquil waters of Lake Ashi aboard traditional pirate ships. There are plenty of ways to soak in the park's majestic landscapes. Additionally, the Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan's oldest mountain railway, winds its way through lush forests and cascading waterfalls, providing a memorable journey to iconic destinations such as Gora and Owakudani. Whether by cable car, boat, bicycle or train, Hakone National Park passes ensure seamless travel and unforgettable experiences amidst the splendour of nature. Hotel wise, you can choose to unwind in a traditional onsen ryokan (with trad mats for beds), where you can soak in the healing waters of natural hot springs and enjoy gourmet kaiseki cuisine prepared with seasonal ingredients. Or, you could opt for a more luxurious hotel if you’re worried about fussy eaters (like me)! Either way, let the tranquillity of Hakone rejuvenate your body and soul, leaving you refreshed and revitalized and ready for the next stop, Kyoto. Please join me in part two, where we will embark upon Osaka, Hiroshima and more importantly, when to go, for how long, great pairings for a twin centre and how to book.

Top Travel Tips LGBTQIA+

01 November 2023

Have you ever felt like you must see somewhere in the world, but aren’t sure if you’d be welcomed with open arms? As a gay man, I have often wondered how other people in the LGBTQIA+ community feel when travelling. I think a certain amount of ignorance in my younger years took me to places I may now reconsider, however – there’s still places I would go and just take more caution. That got me thinking, what are the key defining factors when travelling that spark decisions in the LGBTQIA+ community? I asked around and did some research, and safety is a significant concern for LGBTQIA+ individuals when travelling, as it varies widely from one destination to another. This was even more apparent when the person or people had children too. The degree of safety and acceptance can depend on several factors, including the laws and social attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals in a given country or region. Here are some key considerations regarding safety when traveling as part of the LGBTQIA+ community: Legal Status: In some countries, same-sex relationships may still be criminalized, and LGBTQIA+ rights may not be protected. Travelers should research the legal status of LGBTQIA+ rights in the destination they plan to visit. You can see the current list below. Social Attitudes: Social attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals vary significantly worldwide. While some countries are very LGBTQIA+ friendly, others may have deeply ingrained prejudices. It's essential to be aware of local attitudes and customs. Visibility: Depending on the destination, being openly LGBTQIA+ may attract attention, both positive and negative. It's crucial to consider your comfort level with being open about your identity in a particular place. Local Laws and Customs: Research local laws, customs, and cultural norms to understand how LGBTQIA+ individuals are perceived and treated. What might be acceptable in one place may not be in another. You will see below where it is still deemed illegal. It infuriates me to have to write that sentence! Safety Precautions: In some areas, discretion may be advisable for safety reasons. LGBTQIA+ travellers might choose not to engage in public displays of affection or to be cautious about disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity. Now this is always about the person, their comfort levels and making decisions that keep you safe first. Travel Advisories: Check for travel advisories and guidance from official government sources to understand the safety and political climate of the destination. Connect with Local LGBTQIA+ Communities Online: Local LGBTQIA+ organizations and communities can provide valuable insights and support for travellers, including recommendations on safe spaces and LGBTQIA+ friendly establishments. Accommodations: Choose LGBTQIA+ friendly accommodations, which can often provide a more supportive and safe environment. Some hotels and guesthouses have specific policies in place to ensure the comfort and safety of LGBTQIA+ guests. I can recommend safe accommodation in all of these destinations. Travel Insurance: Ensure that your travel insurance covers any potential issues related to being LGBTQIA+ while traveling, such as medical emergencies or legal assistance. Online Resources: Utilize online resources and LGBTQIA+ travel guides that can offer information and advice specific to LGBTQIA+ travellers. Where is being LGBTQIA+ a problem? While significant progress has been made worldwide in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and decriminalization of same-sex relationships, unfortunately, there are still 66 countries where being LGBTQIA+ remains illegal or acts of homosexuality are illegal, such as same-sex sexual intercourse. The specific laws and penalties vary from one country to another, and here is the list. Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen. Africa: Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Occupied Palestinian Territory (Gaza Strip), Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Caribbean & the Americas: Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and The Grenadines. Pacific: Bhutan, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu. Where is it legal, but still unsafe? Russia: While homosexuality is not illegal in Russia, there have been reports of discrimination, harassment, and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals. Laws aimed at restricting LGBTQIA+ content have also raised concerns. Poland: Although same-sex sexual activity is legal in Poland, there has been a rise in anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment and discrimination in certain regions. Hungary: Hungary has seen increased anti-LGBTQIA+ policies and discrimination in recent years, including the passage of laws that restrict LGBTQIA+ content and rights. In Summary. Please remember that the legal and social landscape for LGBTQIA+ individuals can change over time, and travellers should stay informed and exercise caution when visiting these countries. It's essential to stay informed about the current legal status in specific countries and exercise caution when traveling to places where LGBTQIA+ rights are not protected or recognised. Come and talk to me about your next adventure and how I might be able to make your travel dreams come true!

Discovering the Treasures of Victoria, Australia.

10 October 2023

Having extensively travelled through Victoria during my time living in Australia, I've discovered some truly remarkable gems that the state has to offer. In 2023, this stunning state continues to shine with a wealth of new openings and experiences, making it an ideal time to explore the Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island, Melbourne's laneways, and the Yarra Valley. Moreover, Victoria's natural mineral springs and geothermal spas provide a unique opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation. The Great Ocean Road: A Natural Marvel. One of my all-time favourites is the Great Ocean Road. This iconic destination is more accessible and vibrant than ever. As you embark on this awe-inspiring journey, don't miss the chance to witness the Twelve Apostles, majestic limestone stacks that stand tall in the Southern Ocean. While traversing the Great Ocean Road, make sure to explore charming coastal towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, where you can indulge in fresh seafood and bask in the relaxed coastal atmosphere. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, consider a helicopter ride for a panoramic view of the rugged cliffs and pristine beaches. If you like parakeets – they are here in abundance! Mornington Peninsula: A Wellness Retreat. The Mornington Peninsula is a haven for indulgence. In 2023, it's now home to Alba Thermal Springs & Spa, a luxurious addition to its wellness offerings. Here, you can submerge yourself in natural mineral springs, detoxify in saunas, and treat yourself to rejuvenating spa therapies. Beyond wellness, the Mornington Peninsula boasts a thriving wine scene with boutique wineries and cellar doors. Savor world-class wines while gazing out over picturesque vineyards, and be sure to explore the delightful town of Red Hill with its renowned local markets. Phillip Island: Nature's Playground. Phillip Island, just a short drive from Melbourne, continues to enchant visitors with its unique wildlife experiences. Witness the world-famous Penguin Parade, where adorable little penguins waddle ashore at sunset. Be captivated by koalas in their natural habitat at the Koala Conservation Centre and explore the rugged beauty of Cape Woolamai's coastline. Melbourne's Laneways: Urban Delights. Melbourne, the vibrant heart of Victoria, is a city that never ceases to amaze. Its famous laneways, adorned with street art, cozy cafes, and boutique shops, are a testament to its distinctive character. In 2023, Melbourne has seen a wave of new openings, including chic hotels that provide a stylish and comfortable base for your urban explorations. Take a leisurely stroll through Hosier Lane to admire the ever-changing street art, indulge in international cuisine on Degraves Street, and discover serenity within the Royal Botanic Gardens. Melbourne's dynamic arts scene, diverse culinary offerings, and lively events ensure there's always something exciting happening. The Yarra Valley: A Wine Lover's Paradise. For wine enthusiasts, the Yarra Valley is a paradise with over 800 wineries and 600 cellar doors. In 2023, the region continues to evolve with new wineries and tasting experiences. Relish exquisite cool-climate wines while gazing upon rolling hills and vineyards. Complement your wine with gourmet meals at the Yarra Valley's renowned restaurants, where locally sourced ingredients take centre stage. Victoria's Wellness and Spa Experiences. Victoria's geothermal springs and natural mineral springs offer an exclusive spa and wellbeing experience. In 2023, you can uncover the serenity of Metung Hot Springs in Gippsland, where geothermal waters soothe your body and soul. With more spa openings on the horizon, Victoria remains a pioneer in wellness tourism. Aboriginal Culture in Victoria. Aboriginal culture in Victoria, particularly in and around Melbourne, offers a rich tapestry of history, art, and traditions waiting to be explored by tourists. Victoria is home to several Indigenous communities, each with its unique cultural heritage. To truly appreciate and respect this ancient culture, tourists can engage in a range of meaningful experiences. One way to connect with Aboriginal culture is through guided tours and immersive experiences offered by Indigenous-owned businesses and cultural centres. These experiences often include traditional storytelling, dance performances, and art demonstrations, providing a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic facets of Indigenous life. Visiting significant sites and landmarks, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, which feature an Indigenous Garden, or the Koorie Heritage Trust in Melbourne, can deepen one's understanding of Aboriginal history and contemporary contributions. Many art galleries and shops in Melbourne showcase Indigenous artworks, offering tourists the opportunity to support local artists and purchase authentic pieces. Respecting the land and its custodians is paramount. Tourists can do their part by following the principles of "Tread Lightly" tourism, which means leaving no trace, respecting sacred sites, and seeking permission when entering certain areas. Learning about the land's significance and the Dreamtime stories that connect Indigenous communities to it is a meaningful way to appreciate the deep spiritual ties. Wheelchair Accessibility in Victoria. Victoria, Australia, is generally wheelchair-accessible, with many attractions, public transportation, and accommodations designed to accommodate mobility challenges. Major cities like Melbourne prioritize accessibility, with ramps, lifts, and accessible public transport options. Popular attractions often provide accessible facilities and services, but it's advisable to check in advance. While some older buildings may pose challenges, overall, Victoria strives to make its diverse attractions and natural wonders accessible to all. In Summary. Victoria, Australia, welcomes travellers with open arms and a wealth of new experiences. From the natural wonders, to pure relaxation and wellness offerings, the urban charm of Melbourne, and the wine-rich Yarra Valley, Victoria has it all. These have been my personal favourites, and I invite you to explore this vibrant state, where each day brings new adventures, and where nature, culture, and relaxation converge to create unforgettable memories. A Solo Adventurer's Christmas in Tenerife

03 October 2023

The allure of spending Christmas in a place where sun-kissed beaches meet rugged volcanic landscapes led me to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. As a solo traveller, with constant itchy feet, I yearned for an adventure that would combine the joy of the festive season with the thrill of exploration. Little did I know that this magical island in the North Atlantic Ocean would captivate my heart, with its remarkable destinations like La Orotava, Santa Cruz, the Masca region, and more. Forget the tourist-driven south of the island, welcome to Tenerife North. Puerto de la Cruz. Nestled between the majestic Atlantic Ocean and the towering Teide volcano, Puerto de la Cruz offers some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes on the island. To the north, the town's coastline boasts beautiful beaches, including Playa Jardín, which is known for its unique black sand. The crashing waves create a mesmerizing backdrop, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. It was rather sleepy here during Christmas week, but still plenty shops, spas and attractions open during the day time. To the south, the iconic presence of Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak, looms in the distance. Its snow-capped summit provides a striking contrast to the warm, coastal atmosphere of Puerto de la Cruz. The view of Teide from the town is nothing short of awe-inspiring, especially during sunset when the mountain is bathed in a warm, golden glow. Throughout my solo adventure in Tenerife, I stayed at the Atlantic Mirage Suites and Spa in Puerto de la Cruz. The beautiful rooms with generous balconies offered breath-taking views of the North Atlantic Ocean to the north and the majestic Teide volcano to the south. The friendly staff, rooftop Jacuzzis, and delicious food made it a perfect home away from home for Christmas week. The thoughtful touch of little Christmas cards and chocolate gifts from housekeeping on Christmas Eve added a warm and festive touch to my stay. Santa Cruz: A Lively Christmas Fiesta! Santa Cruz, the bustling capital of Tenerife, is where tradition seamlessly blends with vibrant festivities during the Christmas season and a must-see hotspot. The city comes alive with a dazzling display of lights, colourful decorations, and an infectious sense of joy. What makes Santa Cruz truly special during this time is its efficient tram system, which allows you to explore the city's vibrant streets and attractions with ease. As you wander through the city's streets, you'll discover an array of museums, charming shops, and delightful eateries. From the exquisite Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, celebrating the natural history of the Canary Islands, to the bustling Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, where you can savour local delicacies, Santa Cruz offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and modernity. One of the unique features of Santa Cruz is its picturesque harbour, where you might be treated to a glimpse of majestic cruise ships anchored in the port. The vibrant city atmosphere is further enhanced by street performances, parades, and open-air concerts. The Plaza de España, a central hub, transforms into a winter wonderland with a massive nativity scene and a towering Christmas tree, creating a captivating backdrop for holiday festivities. Santa Cruz truly encapsulates the spirit of Christmas, where traditions like the "Baile de los Enanos" (Dance of the Dwarves) and the "Cabalgata de Reyes" (Three Wise Men Parade) are celebrated with exuberance. It's a place where you can join in the merriment with the locals, try traditional holiday treats, and immerse yourself in the joyous ambiance that only Santa Cruz can offer. Whether you're exploring the city's historic districts, hopping on the tram to see the sights, or indulging in its culinary delights, Santa Cruz is a captivating destination that beautifully balances the old and the new, making it a must-visit during your Tenerife Christmas adventure. La Orotava: A Timeless Charm. Nestled amidst the northern hills of Tenerife, La Orotava is a town that exudes timeless charm. Cobblestone streets lead to picturesque squares adorned with ornate Spanish balconies and centuries-old churches. During the Christmas season, La Orotava transforms into a captivating wonderland, with vibrant lights and festive decorations illuminating every corner. On Christmas Day, I ventured into the heart of the town, guided by the melodious sound of church bells. Inside the magnificent church, I was greeted by the heavenly voices of the congregation singing "Come All Ye Faithful" in Spanish. It was a soul-stirring experience that left me feeling comforted and ready to continue my day of exploration. The World's Oldest Tree in Icod de los Vinos. Icod de los Vinos, a town on the northern coast, holds a captivating secret – the world's oldest dragon tree, known as "El Drago." This ancient tree, estimated to be over a thousand years old, stands as a symbol of Tenerife's rich history and natural beauty. Strolling through the town's charming and colorful streets, I felt like I had stepped into a fairy tale. Culinary Delight at El Burgado. In the small fishing village near Playa Las Mujeres, I stumbled upon a hidden gem - El Burgado, a fish restaurant that left my taste buds dancing with delight. The fresh seafood, prepared with a dash of local flair, was a culinary experience I'll cherish forever. The serene coastal setting added to the enchantment of this culinary haven, as I watched the glistening sun bounce off the water with a gin & tonic. The Enchanting Masca Region: A Test of Nerves. For those with a sense of adventure and nerves of steel, a drive through the Masca region is a must. The winding mountain roads offer breath-taking vistas of towering cliffs and lush green valleys. It's a journey that takes you through the heart of Tenerife's wilderness, and it's not for the faint of heart. But the reward is the unparalleled beauty of this untouched natural wonder. In Tenerife, I felt safe and welcomed in all places. For solo travellers seeking a unique and unforgettable Christmas experience, Tenerife offers a perfect blend of tradition, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. It's a destination that will capture your heart and leave you with cherished memories for years to come. To book your trip to Tenerife, or your next solo adventure – get in touch!

Navigating the Complex Terrain of Travelling with Wheelchairs: A Guide to Smooth Skies

03 October 2023

Travelling can be an exciting and enriching experience, offering us the chance to explore new horizons, cultures, and experiences. However, for individuals who rely on wheelchairs for mobility, the joy of travelling can come with an added layer of complexity and stress. One of the most challenging aspects of travelling with a wheelchair is ensuring that it can be safely accommodated on an aircraft. In this article, we'll explore the minefield that is getting different types of wheelchairs on aircraft, the reasons behind the difficulties, and how experts can help ease this stress. The Challenge! Imagine planning a dream holiday or an important business trip, only to find that the logistics of taking your specialised wheelchair on the aircraft seem insurmountable. It's a situation that many wheelchair users face. Airlines have various policies and procedures in place for accommodating wheelchairs, but they can be confusing and inconsistent from one carrier to another, or even one aircraft to another within the same airline. This variability makes the process of traveling with a wheelchair feel like navigating a minefield, filled with potential obstacles and pitfalls that ultimately could ruin a trip, or mean you can't travel at all. Why Is It So Challenging? Several factors contribute to the complexity of getting different types of wheelchairs on aircraft. -Diverse Wheelchair Types: Wheelchairs come in various shapes, sizes, and configurations. Some are manual, some are electric, and others are specialized for specific medical needs. Each type requires a unique approach to secure it safely on an aircraft. -Airlines' Policies: Airlines have their own policies and procedures regarding wheelchair accommodation. These policies can vary widely and are not always clear to passengers. -Aircraft Variability: Different types of aircraft have varying cargo holds and stowage areas, which can affect how wheelchairs are loaded and secured. -Safety Concerns: Airlines prioritize passenger safety above all else. Ensuring that wheelchairs are securely stored is essential, but it can be challenging with diverse wheelchair types. -Communication Gaps: Miscommunication between passengers, airline staff, and ground handlers can lead to misunderstandings and complications. The Solution! Amidst these layers of complexities, there is a beacon of hope – experts who specialise in accessible travel. These professionals understand the nuances of different wheelchair types, the intricacies of airline policies, and the safety protocols required for a smooth journey. Here's how they can make a difference. Personalised Guidance: Accessible travel experts provide personalised guidance tailored to your specific needs and wheelchair type, ensuring that you are well-prepared for your journey. -Pre-Trip Planning: They can help you plan ahead, making arrangements with the airline and coordinating any necessary equipment or accessories to facilitate a seamless travel experience. -Liaison with Airlines: Experts can act as intermediaries between you and the airline, ensuring clear communication and adherence to your requirements. -Problem Solving: In case of unexpected issues, accessible travel experts can troubleshoot and find solutions quickly, reducing stress and inconvenience. -Peace of Mind: By enlisting the help of an expert, you can enjoy your trip with confidence, knowing that your wheelchair will be handled with care and expertise. And your holiday all ties up with no issues. In conclusion, travelling with a wheelchair can be challenging, but it shouldn't deter anyone from exploring the world. The minefield of logistics involved in getting different types of wheelchairs on aircraft can be navigated with the right guidance. By seeking the assistance of a wheelchair travel expert, you can ensure a smoother, more enjoyable journey. Don't let the complexities hold you back from experiencing the wonders of travel – reach out to an expert and let them ease the stress of your next adventure in the skies.

Leaving no stone unturned in Far North Queensland (Part 2 of 2)

20 June 2023

Hi, thanks for coming to check out the second instalment of my adventures in FNQ. Let’s pick up in Kuranda. Kuranda, The Village in the Rainforest Surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest, 1,000 feet above Cairns, lies the picturesque village of Kuranda. The journey to Kuranda is an experience in itself. You can take a gentle drive up through the rainforest, float above the trees aboard Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, or catch the world famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. A great idea is to take the train one way and the Skyrail the other. If you drive, stop off at the Henry Ross lookout for a jaw-dropping view of Cairns in all its glory. However you decide to arrive, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to discover everything the village has to offer. There’s the famous arts and crafts market, river cruises, ATV quad biking, rainforest walks, and an abundance of wildlife experiences such as Birdworld which I visited and loved. Browse through the quaint village shops for vibrant had crafted silk and cotton clothing, exclusive jewellery (such as Australian opals), locally made Aboriginal artwork, gifts and more. Then stop for a spot of lunch at one of Kuranda’s many eateries where outdoor dining is one of the joys of our cooler mountain climate. Kuranda is a delightful mix of quirky surprises, colourful characters and natural beauty, perched right at the top of the rainforest. Baron Gorge National Park The Barron River dominates the park. Rising from the rainforests of Mount Hypipamee National Park, the river winds 60km across the Atherton Tableland through one of Australia's highest rainforest belts. The river falls 250m onto the narrow coastal lowlands and flows to the Coral Sea, just north of the Cairns Airport. During the wetter months (which I have experienced and actually adored), floodwaters regularly create a spectacular sight at Barron Falls which can be seen in my photos. Barron Falls is a tremendous waterfall located just 3.5km from Kuranda village, however the railway options from/to Cairns has a stop here. In fact, the train goes right in front of them almost and is probably a true once in a lifetime experience. When I approached them this year I was literally gobsmacked. I had the pleasure of visiting during a particularly wet season and the force behind those falls is intense! Totally worth the walk from the station platform up to the car park as you can learn about the history, wildlife and horticulture of this resilient rainforest. The Daintree The 95 km (60 mile) Daintree region starts at Mossman Gorge, an hour's drive north of Cairns, continues past the picturesque Daintree Village across the Daintree river through the rainforest of the National Park to Cape Tribulation along the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown. Here is where you are most likely to cross paths with a Cassowary, a large bird native to Australia. The Daintree rainforest is believed to be one of the three oldest in the world with unique plants and animals found nowhere else, a Paradise for nature-lovers. Explore the Daintree on your own or with an expert guide - ancient rainforests, stunning valleys, superb beaches, spectacular forest-clad mountains, clear streams, magnificent rivers and rolling farmlands. My top two trips I would suggest doing would be the Solar Whisper Cruise and Cape Tribulation. I have lost many-a-night in Cape Trib as a backpacker (to beer or goon [wine] that is), and I can’t speak highly enough of the cruise. This boat excursion is out of this world, as is the guide and owner. It allows you to see crocodiles, birds, snakes, frogs and many more species up close and personal (well, from the safety of the boat) and is truly the wild! There is no commercialism here, just raw beauty and unfiltered views of this magical part of FNQ. The boat has fantastic equipment with cameras so not to miss the smaller creatures, although I fear ‘The King’ (resident croc) among others will take your wanderlust to a whole new level. Port Douglas Port Douglas sits between Cairns and the Daintree and for some is the preferred place to stay. The drive to Port Douglas is amazing. Some say it’s better than the Great Ocean Road and I have to agree. You drive on the verge where rainforest meets beach meets reef. On the way you could also stop off at Palm Cove or Trinity beach where the more affluent would stay or reside. These areas have resorts, beaches, cafés and restaurants. You can swim at the beaches within the swimming nets. You can’t swim outside of these for safety reasons during marine stinger season. if you are a bit of an adrenaline junkie like me, you might enjoy the bungee and swing by AJ Hackett which is not far from the Smithfield Skyrail station. There's so many more to choose from too, such as Rapid Boarders, Australia's only white water river boarding or perhaps Behana Canyoning. If you are more of a foodie, you could go on an outback tasting tour where you often get to see platypus in their natural habitat along the way! I have stayed at the Pullman at Palm Cove for a night and their rooms are fabulously spacious and some even have private rooftop terraces and jacuzzis! Port Douglas has a very different feel to Cairns. With lots of retirement complexes, huge resort style hotels and golf courses and very trendy cafes and restaurants too. If you visit here please go to the the little church on the beach (St. Mary’s) as it’s probably one of the cutest and most tropical looking churches in the world. The shops are very boho for the most part, and the foodies out there will be spoiled with choice. Hotels & Apartments There are so many to choose from, it’s really hard to pick favourites. However, when it comes to finding the right place for you I can assure you that there is something for everyone. Backpackers The YHA in both Cairns and Port Douglas are great for value for money and locations. In Cairns, I would also recommend Dreamtime Travellers Rest (where I learned how to spin fire poi for fellow backpackers every Wednesday, ha) and also for the younger crowd, Gilligan’s is more a backpacker hotel and definitely the party place! That pretty much sums up my FNQ experiences, although I would be happy to chat about this at any time. Please call or email me if you are thinking about your next trip.

Leaving no stone unturned in Far North Queensland (Part 1 of 2)

20 June 2023

Hi, thanks for taking the time to visit my travel blogs. Here is part 1 of my Far North Queensland adventures. Cairns is a city in tropical Far North Queensland (FNQ) and just one of the many places to visit when travelling around North-Eastern Australia. I am lucky enough to have travelled around this region extensively and lived there for a few months too, back in 2013. More recently, I visited my old stomping ground in 2020 to find new developments, a modernising city centre yet all the original charm of the wet tropics remains unchanged. I have toured or lived in Cairns as a backpacker, a work-goer, a weekend away and most recently simply for pleasure. Every time I have been I fall in love a little more. As a Brit, spending Christmas in the tropics was a little strange, but I definitely made the most of it! FNQ boasts luscious rainforests, pristine beaches, wild rivers and waterfalls. I have certainly developed a love for the region and for just getting good and lost in order to find new places. If you have a passion of flora and fauna, breath-taking panoramas or adrenaline activities you will be heading to the right place. Millaa Millaa Falls, Atherton Tablelands Cairns is surrounded by natural beauty and is in fact the only place in the world to have 2 world heritage listed areas side by side. These are of course the Great Barrier Reef the Daintree Rainforest. Any area with one of these destinations on it's doorstep would be well worth visiting, but to have two makes FNQ truly special. Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing visible from space. The world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef stretches almost 2,260kms into the Pacific from the tip of Queensland. Cairns is considered the gateway to Australia's Great Barrier Reef amongst many other awesome adventures. The reef is very easily accessible from a little further north in Port Douglas too. You receive all the guided information, food and water, tea and coffee included as well as all of the snorkelling/diving equipment. I can help book these places. Green Island and Fitzroy Island Both of these islands are great to visit and you can even stay on the island camping or in the hotel. My personal favourite between the two is Fitzroy purely because of how utterly beautiful it is, especially Nudey beach (not full of nudes, it’s just a name although that may have inspired a giggle on the trip). If you want to snorkel and see lots of colours of marine life I would still suggest doing the outer reef platforms. The islands are tropical resorts encompassing island life. My recent adventure to the reef was with the tour company Great Adventures. They are recognised by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as a High Standard Operator and all of their tours are accredited with Advanced Ecotourism and Climate Action Innovator Certification. The tours ensure guests have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate this most important World Heritage area. As part of the Quicksilver Group, they are committed to sustainable environmental practices and ongoing conservation for future generations to enjoy This trip was out of Cairns and the boat ventured to Green Island first to drop off visitors there (some staying overnight on the island) and then onto the outer reef platform. This time around I snorkelled and I can honestly say that was ideal. I swam with over 100 different species including napoleon fish, white tip reef sharks and following a beautiful young sea turtle for quite some time. I hope he/she didn’t mind! Fitzroy Tips Take a hike to the lighthouse via a very steep service road (concrete wheel tracks) that begins from the north-east end of the camping area. A lookout on the windy north side of the island offers views of Green Island on a clear day. From the lighthouse you can enjoy expansive views of the ocean, and in winter you may be lucky enough to spot an occasional migrating humpback whale. For 360 degree views of Fitzroy Island take the nearby Summit Track. This boulder-strewn track climbs for 600m through woodland to the summit. From here you can enjoy magnificent views over the island, surrounding reefs and mainland, which make this difficult walk well worth the effort! From the summit, the track then descends for 1.4 km through woodland and open heathland, returning to the north-east end of the camping area. Fitzroy also hosts Cairns’ Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) which is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. Tjapukai Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park tells the stories of indigenous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with music and dance. A couple of years ago I hired this venue to support a work event and the history and stories I heard were simply fascinating. This museum and show truly immerses you in the Aboriginal way of life. Cairns Esplanade Lined with bars and restaurants, the esplanade or the ‘Espy’ has a swimming lagoon and lots of space to sunbathe, BBQ or simply hang out with friends. When visiting this year I noticed some major redevelopments of the esplanade including an upcoming hotel and entertainment complex that will be sure to attract people the world over. You can easily walk between the esplanade, the port and the shopping that Cairns city has to offer. Botanical Gardens, Cairns I really love this part of the city. The Cairns Botanical Gardens are a tropical paradise, renowned as one of the best exhibitions of tropical plants in Australia. It separates into various different ‘zones’ and each one contains certain species from all over the globe. My favourite part is the Chinese garden and lake - so serene! I would often be found here just getting lost in thought and hours passing by. It’s also completely free to enjoy which makes it even better when on a budget, which most of the time, I am! Shopping and Markets For a taste of FNQ shopping, you can either choose between various markets, the Cairns Mall or the Harbour area. Loads of bohemian clothing, your typical Australian souvenirs and luxury can all be found. You won’t be short of a shop to visit. Please check out part 2, where I pick up from Kuranda, the rainforest village and areas such as the more luxurious Palm Cove and Port Douglas. As always, get in touch if you want to discuss your next adventure!

A massive thankyou to Steve and the team, for organising and executing our 20-day excursion across India. Our brief did alter slightly from the initial concept. You managed our changes with professionalism and aplomb, kept us informed at all stages and the proof was in the end result - A perfect journey with faultless execution at every stage. Over the 20 days we stayed at 9 different hotels, had 6 train journeys, 4 flights and 18 car journeys. Greet and meets totalled 19, at railway stations, airports and hotel meets. Our guides were prompt, accommodating and well versed in local knowledge. Extremely happy with the service!

Can't recommend highly enough. I only met Steve Garside-Brown from Travel Counsellors last week. We ended up chatting about a bucket list trip I’ve been dreaming of — taking the kids to Lapland. Next year feels like the sweet spot: our youngest will be old enough to understand the magic, and our eldest hopefully still young enough to believe in it. Steve totally got it. He listened, he cared, he’s been super responsive, and I now have every confidence this really will be a trip of a lifetime! I also won't be going anywhere else for my travel needs, and I will be recommending Steve to anyone who listens!
