Mauritius Memoirs: A Tropical Christmas Escape at Zilwa Attitude

Tracy Goffin on 23 December 2023
This past Christmas and New Year were spent basking in the beauty of the tropical paradise, of Mauritius. After enduring a soggy Christmas in Cornwall the previous year, we made a unanimous decision to head somewhere warmer for Christmas 2023.

The choice was crystal clear - The Zilwa Attitude in Mauritius, a decision made after poring over a PowerPoint presentation of enticing options back in January 2023. Fast forward 11 months, and on the 23rd of December 2023, we embarked on a direct Air Mauritius flight from London Gatwick, spanning just under 12.5 hours. The flight was bustling with activity, with some attempts at sleep, albeit limited. The impeccable service and above-average plane food made the journey more enjoyable. Upon landing in Mauritius, the swift immigration process and prompt luggage arrival set the tone for a seamless start. Our transfer company efficiently transported us to the Zilwa Attitude, and the view that greeted us at the reception was nothing short of breathtaking.

The Zilwa Attitude proved to be an impeccable choice, with outstanding food, service, rooms, and amenities. While it might be more suitable for couples during term time, the holiday period saw families enjoying the resort.

Our dining experience at Zilwa Attitude was nothing short of amazing. The culinary choices were truly diverse, with a buffet that featured a vast array of options, each night boasting a different theme. In addition to the buffet, the hotel offered four speciality restaurants, and we were pleased to find that securing reservations was a hassle-free process. To ensure we didn't miss out on any culinary delights, we opted to prebook our first week's reservations before arriving. Among the standout dining experiences was The Lor Disab, an adult-only à la carte restaurant situated right on the beach. The setting was picturesque, and the food surpassed expectations, earning a solid 5-star rating in our book. For breakfast, we enjoyed the main buffet restaurant, which offered something for everyone. Lunches served buffet-style on the beach or at the à la carte snack bar, provided delightful options. And for those looking for something extra, a Mauritian snack bar served fabulous samosas, while from 4 pm onward, a delightful crepe bar catered to our post-lunch cravings. The dining options at Zilwa Attitude were not only abundant but also of high quality, ensuring that our culinary journey was a memorable aspect of our stay. The variety, the scenic locations, and the attention to detail in each dining venue contributed to an exceptional dining experience at the hotel.

Some memorable highlights of our trip included exploring Gran Zil, a picturesque island reachable by swimming, walking, or a short boat ride for a delightful barbecue lunch. The Catamaran cruise, though an additional charge, offered a day filled with adventures, including an entertaining crew and a cautionary note about the potent vitamin juice! The festive season at Zilwa Attitude was nothing short of magical - from the Christmas Eve Gala Dinner to the New Year's Eve Entertainment, topped off with a visit from Father Christmas on his horse.

Exploring the Wonders of Mauritius Our days in Mauritius were brimming with excitement as we explored the island's numerous attractions. Some standout experiences include witnessing the sunset at Grand Baie, the nearest village to Zilwa. The village boasts craft shops, designer clothes shops, bars, and restaurants, creating the perfect backdrop for a memorable evening by the ocean. A speedboat ride to Ile Aux Cerfs, a breathtaking island frequented by speedboats and catamarans, was another highlight. Snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, followed by a visit to the Grand River waterfall and a beachside barbecue, made for a perfect day in paradise. Don't forget the mosquito cream for this adventure! Casela Park, a safari park with added activities, added a touch of adventure to our trip. Opting for a guided quadbike tour, we had the chance to get up close with zebras, ostriches, and even a giraffe. Thrill Mountain offered an adrenaline-pumping experience, with a nerve-wracking Nepalese bridge crossing and a zip line over a gorge. Our catamaran trip from Zilwa was a fusion of relaxation and excitement, featuring snorkelling stops, a refreshing swim in the Mangroves, and a delicious lunch on the boat. The day culminated with an exploration of Ile aux Bernaches, complete with flowing drinks, lively tunes, and some unforgettable dance moves on the return journey.

In essence, Mauritius is a paradise waiting to be explored, with its stunning beaches and welcoming locals. Despite the flight time, the island's myriad attractions make it a destination well worth the journey.
