Fred Olsen - Balmoral

I was recently invited to view the Fred Olsen ship Balmoral. It's a relatively small ship but is Fred Olsen's largest in the fleet with 710 cabins and weighing 43,537 tonnes. The ship's facilities include small outdoor swimming pools, jacuzzis, sun decks and a promenade deck. There is a fitness centre (well equipped gym), beauty salon and infrared hot room Restaurants onboard include two main dining rooms for waiter service (two sittings for dinner) and a buffet-style cafe which is open all day. There are no 'speciality' restaurants, so no extra charges are made for any of the dining options. There is also a pub style bar, large card room, well stocked library, small theatre/show room for evening entertainment and internet centre. All cabins have en suite, TV, hairdryer, phone, individual air conditioning/heating, tea and coffee making facilities. All sterling on board and tips are added onto the cabin bill (a very reasonable £4 per person per day). Or if passengers wish to deal with tipping themselves, Fred Olsen have no problem taking these off for passengers to sort out themselves. The ships offers good value for money, as everything on board is in sterling and all prices shown are what you pay. There are no extra service fees / taxes added onto the bill. Drinks charges are reasonable and inclusive of service charge. At current prices, a soft drink such as Pepsi is £1.15, a Gin and Tonic is £3, Pina Colada £3.95, pint of draught beer £2.70, bottle of wine from £14.95. Fred Olsen has a reputation for good food and friendly atmosphere. My impression was it is a light and airy ship and the decor is surprisingly contemporary and minimalist. It's a great option for those passengers wishing to experience a relaxed, no fuss cruise and older age groups who are looking for a British style, pleasant, no-hassle experience. There is a good ambiance on board as it's a small ship and it's easy to make acquaintance with new friends in a relaxing, calm, no nonsense atmosphere with low key, traditional entertainment.
