I was lucky enough to be invited to lunch on P&O's newest and smallest addition - the Adonia - today.
As soon as you step on board you realise that this is not like any other P&O ship. The atmosphere is one of relaxed charm. With the wood panelling all around the ship and a grand staircase there is a traditional feel.
Exclusively for adults, the Adonia will be for those of you looking for a more traditional and intimate experience. For anyone who has been on a Azamara ship - she is the same layout and style.
As she is a smaller ship, she can visit more unusual destinations for example Sarande in Albania or Rijeka in Croatia, to name just two - therefore avoiding the well trodden 'tourist traps' that many of the other larger ships visit. Adonia is all about the journey.
The food and service was excellent. We ate in the light and airy Pacific Restaurant served by the friendly and unobrusive waiters but there is also the Ocean Grill by Marco Pierre White (he is on board on a regular basis himself) and the Sorrento restaurant with only £5 per head extra cover charge for an Italian feast.
Alternatively, the buffet restaurant (The Conservatory) has an array of choice and the themes change to reflect the day's destination. Enough variety and choice for your whole cruise.
Note that dining is either Main or Late dinning options - no 'Any Time' dining option available. Also, if you prefer a table for 2 there were plenty available by the windows and although a table for 2 is always on request and no guarantee, there is a good chance you will get one on this ship.
For entertainment on board there is the Curzon Lounge. There is no multi tiered theatre (the size of the ship does not permit this) but this lounge offers high quality shows every evening (2 performances per night to fit in with your dining choice) and the chairs are comfortable arm chairs to relax in. The dance floor plays host to dance evenings, after dinner speakers, plays, soloists and classical recitals.
There are many bars and lounges around the ship for you to take a relaxing drink day or evening and piano bars to chill out after a long day exploring the exciting ports of call. A well stocked wood pannelled library also beckons.
Keep fit in the excellent and well equiped gym and treat yourself to a treatment in the beautiful spa and treatment rooms.
Cabins - although we were not able to see cabins on board as the ship was full, I have viewed those on Azamara which are the same. Feedback I have had from past clients is that they are alittle on the small side but have all the usual amenities you would expect. For those requiring more space and not concerned about a balcony the IC grades forward on deck B and C are very spacious and have very large portholes. Be warned that the obstructed view cabins on C deck are fairly cramped so upgrade if you can to a full view for more space.
Also, watch out for the new itineraries that will be released shortly to the Far East - should be exciting.......
