The Rise of River Cruising: Finding Your Perfect Voyage

18 March 2025

River cruising is on the rise, and after attending the CLIA River Cruise Conference and stepping aboard some of the industry's finest ships, I can see why. If you've never considered a river cruise before, now is the time to take a closer look. With a huge variety of itineraries, destinations, and styles, there's truly a river cruise for everyone. The Scenic Difference One of the highlights of my time at the conference was sailing on Scenic Opal from Budapest to Vienna, a ship that perfectly embodies luxury and effortless exploration. Scenic is known for its all-inclusive experience, from gourmet dining and fine wines to immersive shore excursions and personal butler service. It’s a stress-free way to travel, where everything is taken care of, allowing you to sit back and soak in the scenery as you sail through some of the world’s most iconic rivers. The dining experience on board was exceptional. I enjoyed meals in the elegant Crystal Dining Room, where every dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavour. The variety and quality of the food were outstanding, catering to all tastes with fresh, locally inspired ingredients. I was also lucky enough to experience Portobellos, Scenic Opal’s exclusive fine dining restaurant. This intimate venue offers a carefully curated tasting menu, celebrating regional cuisine paired with exquisite wines. The attention to detail, impeccable service, and incredible flavours made this a standout highlight of my cruise. Every meal on board felt like a special occasion, reinforcing just how unique and luxurious a Scenic cruise truly is. A Cruise for Every Traveller One of the biggest misconceptions about river cruising is that it’s only suited to a particular type of traveller. In reality, river cruises cater to a wide range of interests and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a short but magical festive break, a cultural deep-dive, or a culinary adventure, there’s a perfect sailing for you. Christmas Markets Cruise: Imagine gliding through Europe’s most enchanting cities, stopping to explore twinkling Christmas markets in Vienna, Strasbourg, or Cologne. These short getaways are perfect for those looking to experience the magic of the festive season in a unique way. Mekong Exploration: For something more exotic, why not set sail along the Mekong River from Vietnam to Cambodia? This journey immerses you in the rich history and vibrant cultures of Southeast Asia, with stops at floating villages, ancient temples, and bustling markets. Wine & Gastronomy Cruises: If food and drink are your passion, a river cruise through France's wine regions might be your dream trip. Sail through Bordeaux or the Rhône Valley, sampling world-class wines and regional delicacies along the way. Immersing Yourself in a Destination Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises take you right into the heart of a destination. One of my personal highlights was sailing out of beautiful Budapest, watching the Hungarian Parliament, Fisherman's Bastion and other awesome sights pass by on the riverbank—a truly unforgettable moment. Another standout experience was exploring Bratislava with a local guide, who shared fascinating insights into the city's history and day-to-day life, ending with a chance to sample a delicious traditional Slovak treat. These are the moments that make river cruising so special—the ability to connect deeply with the places you visit. Finding the Right River Cruise for You Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or brand new to the idea, there's a river cruise out there that suits your travel style. If you’re curious, let’s chat! I’d love to help you find the perfect itinerary, ship, and experience tailored just for you. River cruising is more accessible and diverse than ever before—perhaps 2025 is the year you set sail?

A Journey Along the Norwegian Coast: Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages

23 January 2025

When most people think of Hurtigruten, they picture the original working ships ferrying cargo and passengers along Norway’s rugged coast, stopping at numerous ports to serve local communities. While this traditional experience still exists, 2023 marked a new chapter for Hurtigruten as they celebrated their 130th anniversary with the launch of Signature Voyages – a more elevated, front-row experience to showcase Norway’s stunning highlights. Over Christmas 2024 and New Year, we sailed the North Cape Line aboard the MS Trollfjord, a ship beautifully refurbished in Nordic style, and experienced Norway like never before. Our Stay on the MS Trollfjord We stayed in an Arctic Superior cabin on Deck 4, which was perfectly practical with everything we needed. There was ample space to stow our luggage under the beds, a large window providing a daily weather update at a glance, and a TV broadcasting lectures, port information, and views from the bridge. The cabin also included a kettle with coffee and tea, a bathroom with a heated floor (blissful after chilly Arctic days), a powerful shower, and lovely Nordic shampoo/body wash & conditioner. Dining Highlights: Norwegian Coastal Kitchen One of the standout features of the voyage was the food. Breakfast and lunch were served buffet-style at Flora, while dinner offered a delightful three-course meal. The Norwegian Coastal Kitchen concept brought fresh, locally sourced ingredients to life, offering a true taste of Norway. On two occasions, we visited the ship’s signature restaurant, Røst. If reservations are fully booked, don’t hesitate to join the waitlist – we were fortunate enough to get in both times. The experience was spectacular, with delicious dishes perfectly paired with wine and phenomenal service. A highlight was the Havets Bobler fizz, a sparkling wine crafted exclusively for Hurtigruten. I wish I had a bottle of it right now! Memorable Excursions Hurtigruten’s excursions offered unique ways to experience the coast: • Viking RIB Experience: An unforgettable adventure hosted by a knowledgeable guide who brought the Viking era to life. We even met modern-day Vikings! • Whale Watching: Departing from Tromsø, we were awe-struck by pilot and humpback whales. Be prepared, though – the whales have moved further north, meaning the trip included a long boat journey with only about an hour of whale watching. • Christmas Day Sami Excursion: Spending Christmas Day learning about the Sami people was enriching. We met a reindeer and learned about their history and traditions. Did you know the Sami are known for sustainable practices and reindeer herding? Exploring Norway’s Charming Ports The MS Trollfjord, with a capacity of just 500 passengers (fewer than 400 on our voyage), allowed us to visit smaller, less-touristy ports. Highlights included: • Molde: A scenic walk to the Varden viewpoint rewarded us with panoramic views of the town and fjords. • Alta: We strolled into town to visit the Arctic Cathedral and even stumbled upon a small, free ice rink - my inner child was super happy! • Hammerfest: A surprise visit due to a change in itinerary and a favourite! The walk to a viewpoint revealed incredible landscapes. • Tromsø: Known as the "Gateway to the Arctic," it felt a bit commercial compared to quieter ports. However, we recommend trying the hot dogs at Raketten, the world’s smallest bar, serving reindeer and beef hot dogs since 1911! • Svolvær: Sailing into this magical town felt like stepping into a storybook. Don’t miss the iconic fish racks used to dry fish in the Arctic weather and the statue "Fiskerkona" (The Fisherman’s Wife), created by renowned artist Per Ung. Standing 4.5 meters tall at Svolvær harbor, it’s a poignant symbol of the fishing community. • Ålesund: Famous for its Art Nouveau architecture, known locally as Jugendstil, Ålesund was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904. Wandering through its streets felt like walking through a postcard. Look out for the lighthouse that’s part of a local hotel’s honeymoon suite – a unique touch! Crossing the Arctic Circle and the Polar Night A highlight of the journey was crossing the Arctic Circle, followed by the traditional ceremony the next day. Be sure to join in – it’s all part of the fun, but I won't spoil it for you! During the Polar Night, the daylight takes on a mesmerizing blue hue, casting a magical glow over the landscape. Sailing through this twilight-like atmosphere felt otherworldly, even during the limited daylight hours. Stunning fjords, tumbling waterfalls, and if you’re lucky, you will also see the crew testing the lifeboats - a very bright yellow contrast to the blue & white scenery! Chasing the Aurora Borealis For many, the chance to see the Northern Lights is the ultimate reason to visit the Arctic Circle, and it didn’t disappoint. We were lucky enough to witness the aurora three times. Each sighting was unique, but the thrill of the chase was half the excitement. To increase your chances, use an aurora-tracking app, bundle up warmly, head to the deck with a hot drink, and keep your eyes on the sky. The experience is humbling and magical, reminding you of the vastness of the universe. The Unpredictable Arctic Weather Travelling in the Arctic means the weather doesn’t always stick to the plan. This can lead to itinerary adjustments or excursion cancellations for safety. For us, this meant missing two planned activities. We couldn’t make it to North Cape due to rough waves and snow-closed roads in Honningsvåg. Our dog-sledding experience in Tromsø was also cancelled because rain had melted the snow, making it unsafe for both us and the dogs. Thankfully, we swapped it for whale watching, a fantastic alternative. Final Thoughts Our voyage aboard the MS Trollfjord was an unforgettable adventure that blended stunning landscapes, cultural enrichment, and world-class cuisine. Whether exploring quaint ports, tasting local delicacies, or marvelling at the Northern Lights, Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages – and of course, beautiful Norway – truly offer a front-row seat to the best of Norway. For those seeking an elevated coastal experience, this journey comes highly recommended.

February is the perfect month to shake off the winter blues or embrace the chill with a variety of travel options. Whether you’re looking for family fun, a romantic getaway, or an adventure-packed break, here are some of my carefully curated suggestions to inspire your February travels: 1. Family Adventure: Iceland February in Iceland can offer a magical experience for families. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and rejuvenation. 2. Off-Peak Escape: Southern Portugal If you’re seeking a peaceful break without the crowds, Southern Portugal in February is ideal. With its mild weather, charming coastal towns, and plenty of sunshine, it’s perfect for couples or solo travellers. Enjoy quiet beaches, scenic cliffside walks, and fresh seafood, all while avoiding the peak-season rush. 3. Winter Sun & Adventure: Cape Verde For those dreaming of sunshine and warm breezes, Cape Verde ticks all the boxes. This Atlantic archipelago offers stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and thrilling wind sports like kiteboarding. Whether you’re relaxing by the ocean or exploring the islands’ volcanic landscapes, Cape Verde promises a mix of adventure and relaxation. 4. Wildlife Wonders: Whale Sharks in the Philippines February is one of the best months to swim with majestic whale sharks in the Philippines, particularly around Donsol. Choose an eco-conscious operator to ensure a responsible experience that respects these gentle giants. Beyond whale sharks, the Philippines offers stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a warm, tropical vibe. What’s not to love! 5. Cultural & Culinary Delights: Singapore Sitting just 1 degree north of the equator, Singapore is a lush urban oasis. Explore the awe-inspiring Gardens by the Bay, indulge in world-class cuisine at hawker centres or Michelin-starred restaurants, and immerse yourself in the city’s unique blend of cultures. With warm temperatures year-round, it’s a fantastic choice for foodies and garden enthusiasts alike. 6. Romantic Escape: Venice February in Venice, during its quiet season, is enchanting. Wander hand-in-hand through winding canals, enjoy gondola rides, and soak up the charm of historic piazzas. The cooler weather and smaller crowds make it an especially romantic setting for Valentine’s Day or a winter getaway. 7. Girls’ Trip: Côte d'Azur For a chic and stylish girls’ getaway, head to the French Riviera. February offers milder weather, making it ideal for exploring the glamorous towns of Nice, Cannes, and Monaco. Enjoy shopping, dining, and a touch of luxury without the summer crowds. 8. Family-Friendly Sunshine: Canary Islands For a warm half-term holiday, the Canary Islands are a top choice. Tenerife, Lanzarote, or Gran Canaria offer plenty of family-friendly activities, from exploring volcanoes and national parks to waterparks and sandy beaches. With reliable sunshine, short flight times, and plenty to keep kids entertained, it’s a hassle-free option for a mid-winter escape.

Iceland: Land of Fire and Ice – My Top 5 Things to Do

14 November 2024

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to spend a few days over New Year in Iceland. As the clock ticked toward midnight on New Year’s Eve, I found myself in Reykjavik, surrounded by an unforgettable, fiery display of celebration. Unlike many cities, Reykjavik doesn’t have an official fireworks show; instead, the people of the city light up the sky themselves outside the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. It’s a communal spectacle that creates an awe-inspiring atmosphere, welcoming the new year in a way only Iceland can – by blending the raw energy of nature with community spirit. Iceland, known as the "land of fire and ice," is a world of contrasts, where fiery volcanoes meet icy glaciers and thermal springs warm winter days. If you’re planning a visit, here are my top five must-dos to fully embrace the magic of Iceland. 1. Go on a Northern Lights Hunt Few sights on Earth can match the Northern Lights, and Iceland is one of the best places to witness this natural wonder. With solar activity peaking in the 2024/2025 period, now is the ideal time to plan a Northern Lights adventure. The stunning display of colours – greens, purples, and reds dancing across the night sky – is both humbling and exhilarating. Whether you join a guided tour or venture out with a knowledgeable local, watching the Aurora Borealis unfold above Iceland’s dramatic landscapes will be unforgettable. Unfortunately, we were unlucky, and the lights stayed hidden in the clouds, but one day I hope to be treated to a spectacular display! 2. Explore the Golden Circle The Golden Circle is a must for anyone wanting to experience Iceland’s extraordinary natural beauty up close. This popular route takes you through some of the country’s most impressive landscapes. Start with Gullfoss, the “Golden Falls,” where the power and beauty of Icelandic nature are on full display. Then, visit the Geysir Geothermal Area, where steaming hot springs and erupting geysers remind you of Iceland's volcanic power. The tour also takes in Þingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet – a unique sight in itself. 3. Wander Around Reykjavik Reykjavik, Iceland’s charming capital, is a vibrant, walkable city that seamlessly blends modern and traditional elements. Take a stroll along Laugavegur Street, the city’s main shopping avenue, where colourful houses and unique boutiques create a lively atmosphere. Don’t miss Hallgrímskirkja Church, a towering concrete structure offering breath-taking views of the city and surrounding mountains from its observation deck. And make sure to visit the Sun Voyager, a striking steel sculpture of a Viking ship along the waterfront. Known as the Viking Sun, it symbolizes discovery and adventure—perfectly capturing the spirit of Iceland. Reykjavik’s cozy cafes, art galleries, and cultural spots make it an inviting place to explore in any season. 4. Ride an Icelandic Pony Anyone who knows me knows, that my holidays always involve an “animal” element so a visit to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without a ride on an Icelandic pony. Known for their unique “tölt” gait, Icelandic ponies are not only adorable but remarkably smooth to ride. This small, sturdy breed has adapted to Iceland’s rugged terrain, and riding one is a wonderful way to experience the landscapes up close. The tölt makes for a comfortable ride, even for beginners, and you'll feel a deeper connection to Iceland’s history and culture. A ride in the snow was an unforgettable experience for me! 5. Soak in the Blue Lagoon The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa unlike any other. Set within a volcanic landscape, the steamy turquoise waters offer a warm retreat from Iceland’s chilly winter temperatures. What makes the Blue Lagoon unique is its location within a lava field, and the mineral-rich, geothermally heated seawater is naturally renewing. Visiting in winter, as I did, makes it extra special – the contrast between the warm water and the frosty air is an experience you won’t forget. Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights, riding an Icelandic pony, or simply enjoying the culture of Reykjavik, Iceland offers an experience that’s both invigorating and tranquil.

Luxury and Adventure in Tenerife: My Unforgettable Getaway at the Hard Rock Hotel

07 November 2024

Before embarking on my journey as a Travel Counsellor, I treated myself to a short yet indulgent getaway in Tenerife—a perfect escape to recharge and embrace a taste of adventure. Staying at the Hard Rock Hotel, with its vibrant atmosphere and top-tier amenities, set the stage for an unforgettable experience. From the perks of Rock Royalty to the natural wonders of the island, here’s a look at how Tenerife delivered both relaxation and inspiration. Rock Royalty at the Hard Rock Hotel We opted for the Rock Royalty level at the Hard Rock Hotel, and it was well worth it! Rock Royalty offers access to exclusive areas and added perks that elevate the stay—from private check-in to VIP lounge access, it felt like every detail was designed to make the experience smooth and luxurious. The Hard Rock’s dining options are a treat in themselves. With several on-site restaurants, there was always a new flavour to discover. A highlight for me was the Canarian chicken, a local specialty packed with flavour, perfectly capturing the island’s culinary traditions. Lagoon Poolside Perfection One of the most memorable afternoons was spent in a private area we rented next to the lagoon pool. With cava sangria in hand, lobster served fresh, and the sun shining down, it was an idyllic scene. This moment was pure bliss—soaking up the warm atmosphere, indulging in incredible food, and just savouring the escape. Unforgettable Excursions: Teide National Park and Whale Watching To balance the relaxation, we booked a couple of excursions to explore Tenerife’s natural beauty. Our sunset and stargazing tour in Teide National Park was absolutely breath-taking. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, followed by a canopy of stars above the volcanic landscape, felt like a scene out of a movie. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you. Another highlight was a day spent whale and dolphin spotting out on the open sea. Being surrounded by these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was humbling, and I couldn’t resist taking a quick dip in the beautiful blue sea. That feeling of swimming in the open water with Tenerife’s volcanic landscape in the distance is something I’ll cherish. Coastal Walks and Scenic Views Mornings often started with a gentle walk along the coast—a perfect way to spend slightly cloudy mornings. The volcanic rock formations and sweeping views of neighbouring islands created a stunning backdrop. Every corner of Tenerife seemed to offer a new perspective, reminding me of the island’s unique beauty. Final Thoughts This trip to Tenerife offered a perfect blend of luxury, relaxation, and adventure—just what I needed to reset and prepare for my new journey as a Travel Counsellor. Whether you’re looking to indulge, explore, or simply unwind, Tenerife truly has something for everyone.

Exploring the Jungfrau Region: A Swiss Alpine Adventure

28 October 2024

If you've ever dreamt of exploring snowy mountaintops, crystal-clear lakes, and lush green valleys, then Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region should be on your bucket list. Tucked in the Bernese Alps, it’s an outdoor paradise with activities that suit every taste, from adrenaline-fueled paragliding to serene boat trips. Swiss Rail’s clean and efficient network, combined with epic Gondolas and well-connected boats makes exploring the region both easy and enjoyable, adding to the magic of this must-visit destination. Here are my top 5 experiences to inspire your journey! 1. Jungfraujoch – “The Top of Europe” At 3,454 meters above sea level, Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe and lives up to its name as “The Top of Europe.” The iconic cogwheel train from Kleine Scheidegg takes you to this breath-taking viewpoint, where the Aletsch Glacier stretches out below and the mountain peaks soar around you. Even in summer, Jungfraujoch is a winter wonderland, with snow sports and icy explorations. Wander through the Ice Palace or snap photos at the observatory — the views here are unforgettable! Top Tip: Book your tickets early to avoid peak crowds and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy all the snowy fun. 2. Paragliding Over the Alps For thrill-seekers, paragliding over the Jungfrau Region offers an unparalleled view of the Swiss Alps. Imagine launching from a hillside, with the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks towering around you as you glide over forests and valleys below. Interlaken, the main hub for adventure sports, is the perfect place to give paragliding a try. Experienced guides ensure that even beginners can safely enjoy the sky-high views of one of the world’s most iconic mountain ranges. Fun Fact: The Jungfrau Region is famous for adventure sports and is a magnet for thrill-seekers from all around the world. 3. Grindelwald First – An Alpine Playground For those who prefer a mix of adventure and relaxation, Grindelwald First offers sweeping views, fresh mountain air, and exciting activities. A short gondola ride from Grindelwald village takes you to this scenic area, where you’ll find plenty to do. Test your nerve on the cliff walk, fly down the mountainside on the First Flyer zipline, or enjoy the trails on a mountain cart. There are also picturesque hiking trails for a slower-paced experience, each path dotted with viewpoints that reveal new Alpine vistas. Top Tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere and take in the incredible views. 4. Boat Cruise on Lake Brienz A boat cruise on Lake Brienz is a beautiful way to unwind and see the region from a different perspective. Known for its brilliant turquoise hue, Lake Brienz is bordered by mountains and dotted with charming villages. You can stay on board for a round-trip journey or hop off at one of the scenic stops, like the woodcarving village of Brienz or the quiet shores near Iseltwald. Each stop invites exploration, and a boat cruise offers a relaxed way to enjoy Switzerland’s natural beauty. Did You Know? Lake Brienz’s stunning color is created by fine glacial particles that reflect sunlight, giving the water its famous blue-green tint. 5. Trümmelbach Falls – A Rainy-Day Wonder The Jungfrau Region is enchanting, come rain or shine. The Trümmelbach Falls, Europe’s largest subterranean waterfalls, make for a dramatic rainy-day excursion. Hidden inside a mountain gorge, these roaring waterfalls are fed by glacier meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. An elevator carved into the mountain takes you up through a series of cascading waterfalls, all safely viewable from within the mountain itself. Fun Fact: During peak season, Trümmelbach Falls can channel up to 20,000 litres of water per second! Travel Tips for the Jungfrau Region Switzerland’s reliable and pristine rail system makes it easy to move between the villages and sites in the Jungfrau Region without needing a car. With frequent connections and scenic routes, rail travel is a relaxing way to see the countryside while getting from one adventure to the next. Once parked up, we didn't move our car again until we checked on and left the region! With its mix of epic landscapes, thrilling adventures, and tranquil retreats, the Jungfrau Region truly has something for everyone. Whether you're exploring snowy Jungfraujoch, gliding over the Alps, or relaxing by the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, you’re bound to take home memories to cherish for a lifetime.
