We love this location because of the friendly village community and the fantastic links to the world, with Heathrow only 40 minutes away.My dad encouraged my passion for travel from a very early age, taking me on exciting day trips to London, although I can still remember being too terrified to climb the ladder at the top of the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral!As a teenager, I just wanted to see the world. I completed cycling tours to the West Country and organised school walking tours that led to running a New Forest Youth Hostel. My early career in hospitality ensured a strong appreciation for food and wine, which included running our own hotel and restaurant, that is why I feel local food and drink is an exciting part of travel.Customer Service is part of my passion, going the extra mile, delivering the unexpected, when Covid-19 emerged I worked 24/7 to successfully repatriated all my customers from Australia, Vietnam, Philippines, Costa Rica and the Maldives, often needing to re-route and re-book as a result of restrictions that were emerging all the time. However, this is my approach even without CV-19 it is being there on the end of the phone when the customer needs me or resolving a problem before the customer is even aware. On one occasion, at 11pm, I became aware that Yosemite National Park was about to close, due to fires, my family were due to go two days later, I found alternative accommodation and then called the customer, confirming everything whist they stayed by the pool.For my business customers, I have arranged events for companies including elaborate dining in unusual locations, an amazing firework display and made sure guests got to a Champions League match when all flights were cancelled due to an airport closure. However, with business travel it is all about being available to help plan, manage changes and provide solutions so the customer can concentrate on his priorities.Identifying my favourite destinations is a challenge, however, seeing leaping Mantra Rays off the Pacific coast of Mexico was amazing, and the rustic village restaurant in Pergine Valdarno, Tuscany provided a uniquely warm feeling with other unforgettable experiences such as Samaria Gorge in Crete at dawn, skiing in powder at Verbier, Golf in the Algarve or watching a Grand Prix in Malaysia.Whether it is advising a restaurant on a client’s food allergies or organising a private tour in Rome, making sure your travel plans are exactly how you want them is vital. Just imagine the horror on my Mum’s face when, at the innocent age of 7, I announced to all and sundry that “I want to be a new age traveller”. Travel is my destiny – I knew that when I was 4 years old and tried selling a holiday to my 1-year-old sister… with little success. This didn’t faze me though, on the contrary. We were fortunate to be able to travel to many places in Europe when we were growing up and before long, I was the one arranging our high-school end-of-term trip to the South of France.To properly kickstart my career in the industry, I studied Travel and Tourism Management in my home country, Switzerland, and as a reward to myself for graduating, I packed my backpack (or two and the kitchen sink – it was in 2006 after all, long before smart phones and a lot of the bulk was from guide books and maps) and flew on my own to São Paulo to start my South and North America backpacking trip. Over the course of 10 months, I travelled mainly overland through Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Louisiana, the US East Coast, Ontario, Alaska, British Columbia and all along the Pacific Coast to LA. It was absolutely amazing and an unforgettable experience – especially the 52 hours on the bus from Salta (Argentina) to Lima (Peru). A little fun fact: In the last 20 years I have lived in 6 different countries including a summer holiday in Iceland, working in the local hostel and a season working in a hotel on Gran Canaria. By far my favourite places were Vancouver as a city and New Zealand as a country though and the places I went back to several times; I even got married in a small coastal town outside Christchurch/NZ to my Kiwi husband. Our first major trip as a new family was last year, when we finally introduced our pre-schooler to our NZ family as well as friends in Vancouver - only three years later than originally planned, thanks to Covid.Another outcome of the pandemic was me losing my job with the Switzerland Travel Centre, a specialist tour operator for Switzerland. During my time there I worked closely with Travel Counsellors and remembering my chats with a number of my favourite TCs was the catalyst for me to start my own journey as an independent travel advisor and franchise owner. My journey in travel began in 1988 as a YTS trainee at just 17. In September 2000, I became a Travel Counsellor, and I’ve been dedicated to this amazing role for 24 years – which coincides with Travel Counsellors' 30th anniversary. Time flies when you’re doing what you love! Community is at the heart of what I do, which is why I joined the Rotary Club of Alfreton in 2014. I was honoured to become President in 2018 and have proudly taken on the role two more times since. Family is a big part of my life, too. My son Connor, now 23, has grown up alongside my career. In 2022, he moved from volunteering to working, so now funds his own trips – a real win-win! We’ve been fortunate to explore incredible destinations together. My first real trip outside of the UK was a train journey from my home town of Glasgow to Germany at the age of 16 on a 3-month visa. I travelled throughout what was known then as West Germany. I loved every moment. I enjoyed the food, practicing the language and generally just taking in what Germany had to offer. I have since been lucky enough to have travelled and lived in many European destinations. I have enjoyed worldwide holidays to lots of destinations and have travelled within the USA to places such as Hawaii, Utah, New York, Florida and Cuba to name but a few. I arranged my own wedding in Las Vegas followed by our honeymoon in California. I have been fortunate to have visited Egypt several times and have witnessed many changes throughout the years. I have had ridden on the back of an elephant in India and visited the wonderful city of Petra, a sight to behold. We have a bucket list for our round trip of Australia that included Christmas day on sunny beach Queensland in 2016, crossing Sydney Harbour Bridge in the summer 2017 and watching dolphins as the sun went down on Fraser Island. We continue our journey in Melbourne 2019. I have been on many more holidays such as cruises, family trips and girl’s weekend’s home and away. I started straight from school as a trainee and worked my way up to a Branch Manager of a high-street travel agency. In June 2024 I visited Disneyland Paris on a Fam trip, and I have just returned, May 2025, from another trip Walt Disney World thanks to Norse Airlines, Disney and Do something Different which was simply magical!!
